Ok, I know where to buy it BUT why do I have to be 21 to buy bulk rifle ammo when I can buy rifle ammo in regular quanities at 18????

Any info appreciated!

Sounds like an individual seller's policy.
Shop elsewhere and tell the people who won't sell WHY you took your business elsewhere and how much money they missed out on.

There are gun or ammo dealers who err on the side of caution when following the hundreds of rules and laws from both State and Federal governments. The laws can be pretty confusing and they can get conflicting advice even from two different BATFE inspectors. If they screw up even once it's possible for them to loose their license, their business and their freedom.

If they seem open minded I'll try and show them actual laws and regulations where they might be going wrong, but many folks just don't want to hear it. I try and exercise lots of patience but that doesn't always work either.

The last word is that their house rules are the ones you live by. I don't think anyone has ever successfully sued a dealer for going to far in trying to follow the law.

It's good to have a choice of which businesses you buy from.

What cartridge are you talking about? IF it is one that can be used in both rifles and handguns, the seller will go with the older age requirements

That's EVERY CARTRIDGE EVER MADE ... the law is stupid and the seller is being overcautious while dealing with a stupid and unconstitutional law.

I had a Dick's Sporting Goods store that refused to sell me a rifle, even after I showed them the state laws that allowed me to purchase it. Regardless of whether or not I was in the military. So after about 20 minutes of calm discussion, I laughed and told them I would give my money to someone else. Then I told the clerk that perhaps he should learn the law before they got into trouble.

SECTION 23-31-20. Purchase of rifle or shotgun in this State by resident of any state.

A resident of any state may purchase rifles and shotguns in this State if the resident conforms to applicable provisions of statutes and regulations of this State, the United States, and of the state in which the person resides.

My FFL got a good laugh out of it as well, mostly because I think he likes getting the transfer fees I keep sending his way.

Well, not quite true, and whether or not YOU think it is a stupid law, it IS the law, and not too many folks want to risk going to Club Fed over something as stupid as selling the wrong ammo to someone deemed underage by the law

Why? Because of liberal Democrats in office.

I bought a new S&W 357 and all the ammo I could afford when I turned 18,........in 1980.

There is a difference between rifle and pistol ammo. Different powders, different primers and different brass.

Yes, there are long guns that shoot handgun ammo but it is still handgun ammo.

And yes, stupid law. You can shoot and kill on behalf of your country at 18 but you cannot buy your own handgun ammo? Silly indeed.

Are you talking online purchases or local?
I can see if online sellers require you to be 21 for ammo because it would keep them from having to figure out which customers could buy handgun ammo and which couldn't. Running a business, who has time for that?
I'd be surprised if you can't find a local dealer who will cut you a better deal on a bulk purchase.

You're telling me that there cannot be a rifle built to fire every "handgun cartridge" or a handgun to fire any "rifle cartridge"?
Cannot be built? Sure anything CAN be built, but right now, that is not the case....haven't seen too many 577 NE handguns.............

If the OP is asking about CURRENT production guns, then your comment is moot

I saw a revolver once in the old British caliber .57..... something
kinda like a 45-70 derringer, might work, ain't something I'd shoot. Many calibers are usable in a hand gun. Look at the Thompson center, or they could just not want to sell to a guy who is questionable on age.

17 HMR
22 LR
204 RUGER
22-250 REM
223 REM
243 WIN
270 WIN
30-06 SPRG
308 WIN
7MM-08 REM
44 REM MAG
45 COLT/410 GA
45/70 GOVT
460 S&W
500 S&W

There's a selection from the T/C listings for handguns
I suggest banning the sale of every caliber on that list to minor adults between 18 and 20 364/365 years of age, in accordance with federal law. As federal law is always serious business and never stupid or self-contradicting, nobody could possibly have a problem with the enforcement of the law.

I had a clerk at a box store that the brady law/4473 is the reason why kentucky residents have to renew thier drivers license every 4 years. I hated to break it to him the state id had to be renewed long before the gun grabbers came round.

Ive also seen clerks that wont sell calibers that are both handgun/rifle compatible. even saw a female clerk at walmart tell a kid "youre a liar" she "didnt believe it was for a rifle" because she didnt know who he was.

Oh yeah there always is that
the counter person

they don't have to have the jerk work the Gun counter, but every time I make friends with the nice guy, the transfer him...

Let's not get too bent outta shape. He's probably buying .22LR from Walmart and they always ask if it's for a pistol or rifle.

Unless cactus66 states otherwise, that is my guess too. It is up to the seller to follow federal law.
