Hi THR,

Im new here and wish some guidence. i have a uk59 barrel that is threaded to fit to any mosin reciever. i bought it from classicfirearms.com before they sold out and now plan on now buying a stripped reciever from them because i twisted and bent my old one i had trying to get the dang barrel. my question: is there any step by step guide out there to doing this to a nagant or similar rifle? can someone point me in the right direction? tips tricks?

heres a pic of my new barrel

if you cut a relief groove in the barrel shank about .030 in front of the receiver & about .200 deep it will relieve the tension on the barrel threads and the barrel will come right off.
i normally use a lathe to make the cut but it can be done with a hacksaw.

if your lucky the barrel will headspace and time but so far i'd have to say less than 10% of the people who bought them have been that lucky. i was one of the lucky ones.
if yours doesn't headspace and time you will need to have some work done to it. how far its off will determine what all has to be done. it may need the breach & shoulder set back a few thousands to bring the extractor cut into position or it may need to be set back enough to recut the extractor cut and recut the chamber.

the barrel on the top i turned in to a straight taper for a guy on gunboards. if i remember right it came out to .960dia., i also made a sleeve for the section that steps down right in front of the receiver but i forgot to put in in the pics. the bottom barrel is on my rifle and i just turned it down enough to remove the large step out on it.

i need to finish working up the stock for this one

thanks dirtyjim. currently the reciever i have is totaled. i have a C&R and hopefully i can just by thstripped reciever and skip the barrel removal process, if not, ill just by another rifle. this is a difficult project i am undergoing seeing as i only have a few basic tools like a drill press, welding maching and basic hand tools. but i am not scared and am very determind. this is all happening over the next few weeks so i will keep pdating.

I got 4 of those barrels.
One had a gas hole i had to plug.
They are all clocked the same, but all 12 of my Mosin Nagant receivers were clocked differently.

I made a sleeve so I could butt up against the large ring of the reciever.

I had to recut the extractor releif.

I think since the pic of my above rifle, I converted from Uncle Mike's sling stud mount for a Harris bipod to the Weaver rail for the Atlas bipod.

I used the ATI scope mount, but I drilled and countersunk another hole, because I had the barrel off.
