Bullet abbreviations

Going through one of my recipe books (a newly acquired one book one caliber manual) and found a abbreviation that I don't get, In the cast section 158 GR. MEI CAST LSWC. What does the MEI stand for? It's the 38 spec book Dia. .358" Also SIE JHC , NOS .357" Sort of confusing. The COAL is the same for CAST LSWC AND MEI CAST LSWC.

Somebody jump in here if I'm wrong but I always took SIE as Sierra, NOS as Nosler and I believe MEI to be Meister Cast.

MEI = Meister Bullets

Linotype bullets = generally 22 BHN Supermagnum or rifle

Standard bullets = 12-16BHN ( depending on caster )

LSWC = Lead Semi Wad Cutter

JHC = Jacketed Hollow Cavity, not to be confused with Jacketed Hollow Point

JHC's are the answer to finding rapid and complete expansion at sub-optimal velocities.

The JHC is basically swaged into the cup with a "big" pocket in it, then the bullet is swaged shut in a ballisticly appealing manner with the pocket behind the point. Deforms instantly (and rapidly) at lower velocities because there is less material behind the point to transfer energy through, allowing what energy is present to act more forcefully through the lesser material.

If you are seriously going to do any load development with cast bullets, I can not recommend the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook enough, I really cant. Great answers to most of the common questions on cast bullets that pop up here... including a great section on metallurgy and gas checks.

Gives load recipes for dang near every caliber ( except 458 socom, dang you *shakes fist* ( I know it came out after the most recent addition) and many hardnesses of bullets and powders in each caliber.

Many thanks for the info. The lead I shoot are from a local caster with a clamed BHN of 18. Never heard of Meister bullets. Are they a foreign brand? I will check out the Lyman book.

I am curious as to why a bullet of a certain weight , I'm using 200Gr. cast lead semi wad cutters from a local caster. Load data I have gives a different recipe for the MEI bullet and the ones I have. Is there a reason for that?

Depends on firearm vs pressure bbl, hardness of the bullet, lube type.....

there are quite a few variables.
