I want conicals to use in my Old Army for hunting with. It could very well be my backup weapon were I to need to track a hog or, given the chance, a black bear.

I've often heard, in modern schemes, that a FN bullet with a large meplat is the superior design as it starts the wound at that diameter vs a pointy design which will allow the skin to stretch making the initial wound much smaller. How does a RN or RB effect the beginning of the wound track? And does it initiate expansion as well as a FN would (assuming soft lead).

Next is the bullet weight. I know the lighter and therefor faster it is the easier and larger it will likely mushroom, which is nice. On the other hand penetration cannot be lacking. Figuring the powder charge will be a healthy, if not max, load of 3F Triple 7 or Olde Eynsford (I'm ordering a pound to try out) it ought to have a fair velocity. With Kaido's 240 grn FN bullet I can put 35 grns behind it. I've wondered if something around 200-220 grns would be an ideal compromise between expansion and penetration. What do you think?

Buying pre made bullets/conicals I can get (cheaply) a 180 RN with a very small FP, possibly a Lee 220 grn conical, and either of Kaido's FN bullets (240/255), which are quite pricey.

I haven't seen a commercial mold that is exactly what I want, though i do like Kaido's 240 grn FN. For the price of most anyone else's mold I can have Lee make me a custom mold, which I've thought of, which would be to have them redesign their 200 grn FN bullet to be the proper size with the proper band sizes.

I've also considered buying .458" sabots for my .50 cal rifle (1:48" twist) and also using these bullets through my rifle.
