I currently carry Speer Gold Dot 9mm 115gr as my self defense ammo. One concern I have about using this ammo for home defense is over penetration. Would the 124gr or 147gr be less likely to over penetrate? I originally started using the 115gr weight because, my primary practice ammo is 115gr, but a different brand (Rem UMC 115gr FMJ). I use this practice ammo since I can get it for around 12 cents a round as opposed to my self defense ammo cost of 75 cents a round. I still practice with the Gold Dot once every 2 months, shooting a box of 20.

Will the bullet weight make much of a difference?

my understanding is that heavier rounds will tend to penetrate more, but will have less velocity, and the more velocity you have, the more reliably a hollowpoint will expand

in fact it is my understanding that the 124gr round was designed specifically because teh 115gr had problems penetrating even moderate barriers, such as windshield glass.

+1 heavier bullets generaly penatrate more. if you shoot 115 GD well and they function 100% why change IMHO.also I use 115 rem UMC jhp in 2 of my 9mm POI+100%.my walther likes 147 wwwb jhps but its pretty much a safe queen
