BSA makes the 'Sweet 22' scope, which if you can find one, costs $50-$60 and comes with bullet drop compensating elevation knobs for three different bullet types so you can find what ammo shoots best in your gun and install the appropriate turret knob. Twist up the range and shoot with no holdover!
Buy a box of several different brands and see which one(s) your rifle groups best with. Shot placement is most critical factor, even (or especially) on small critters.
My 3 top choices (depending upon critter/conditions) are Remington Subsonics (38? grain), CCI Velocitor (40 grain) and Aguilla 60 grainer (does not stabilize well out of many rifles).
I use winchester wildcats or the cci minimags in a hollowpoint out of my ruger slabside mark 2 pistol.
Often times, its difficult to distingush between a groundhog and a tree stump as they will climb trees and sleep on the low overhanging branches. This is why I use the scope. It helps me know for sure if its a groundhog or just a clump plus it lets me scan a wide area ahead and then carefully go in low for a closer shot.
lol, groundhogs cant see directly in front of their head which is why they turn their head to carefully look, they are however, very sensitive to ground movement and vibration.
