Bullseye shooting: What should I expect?

Don't know if I'll be getting into leg matches or not.....no plans for at this time, but you never know. The Trophy Match already has a match barrel in it. I'm assuming it would be leg match legal. So I'm guessing all it would need is a trigger job to 4lbs.

I could put a lighter spring in it for bullseye.

My guess is that this will be a bullseye gun. I'm shooting a dot on my 22 and just assumed I'd do the same with the 45......but maybe not.

Another gun I'm looking at is the Dan Wesson Pointman Seven. Just seems like it would be easier to start out with a gun that has a match barrel in it. Do the 70's series Colts have match grade barrels?

It's always best to check the CMP rules before buying a pistol for EIC matches. The Springfield Trophy Match is NOT Leg match legal. The front slide cuts are okay, but it has a beavertail grip safety and a Commander style hammer, neither of which are legal on a EIC pistol.

It's my understanding, that the way the rear is cut for the beavertail grip safety, it cannot be replaced with a std grip safety, but someone out there may know for sure.

The only EIC legal out-of-the box Springfields would be their GI or Mil-Spec model, but then you'd be shooting with non-adjustable sights, but I've seen guys do it until they get the money to have the pistol accurized.

A std Series 70 Colt does not have a marked NM barrel like the Series 70 Gold Cup, but they are a decent barrel. You would just have to remove the collet bushing and replace it with a solid fitted bushing.

Well I pulled the trigger on a nice (brand new) Springfield Loaded Target blackened SS that had some performance work done on it by Springfield's Custom Shop. Test target from Springfield shows 1" 5 shot group at 25 yards (they don't test them at 50.) Should fit the bill for a while after a little trigger work (it's at 4.5lbs right now).

Shot a 273 tonight (with my .22) on my second round tonight. That's my first time breaking 270......and that was with an 84 slow. Shot A 96 Timed and 93 Rapid....I was happy with those. Now if I could just do that every time (or better).

Finally received and test fired the Springfield. I like it....shooting .45 is a hoot. I purchased an Ultra Dot Match Dot but have not had it installed yet. I did really well with just the iron sights and I might try those for a little while. I think it still needs a little trigger work but it's not to bad right now....4lb ballpark.

Re-loaded 500 rounds off 200gr LSWC's. That's what I was test firing with. Those should last me a little while.

4lbs is where you need to be I'm not mistaken for bullseye. I also shoot a Springfield and mine is at 4lbs and I love the way it shoots I shoot 180gr swc.

I took a new 22A to the range the other day and shot 2" groups, (most were tighter, occasional stray), semi rapid 10 rounds, boom, boom, boom, as soon as it came back on target...That pistol is heavy at 32 oz...Sights are not the color I like (will fix that today)...That was at 10 yds.

One hand and two hand holds left or right handed...I like where they have the mag release, takes a few times to get used to it, but after a couple of hundred rounds no problem...

That little shooter is nice, I likee...

:uhoh:

3.5lbs for bullseye with centerfire and .45

2.0lbs with the .22

4.0lbs for .45 Hardball matches.

Except, that unless it's a different model, the Springfield Fred40 got is not legal for CMP matches. The Springfield Loaded Target has a couple disqualifying features; commander hammer, beavertail grip safety.

Correct, my Springfield is not legal for CMP matches.

Darn I'll just have to get another gun if I decide to get into those. :)

My trigger is not bad.....but I'll get it "tweaked" to 3.5.

And you were close....but it's this one: http://www.springfield-armory.com/armory.php?version=18
