Bumps in the night at my house get responded to with my 12 gauge, my reasoning on this is that if I am roused from a sound sleep I dont have to be that accurate..... Just point in the general direction and Im good to go!

This reminds me of what I heard about the US Army in South Korea in the late '50s. The guys on border guard duty were issued 12guage pumpguns and 00. Challenge, then if they don't give the right password, shoot in there where the sound came from.

Thats kind of like my home defense battery (Mossberg 500, SKS and CETME), although I also have some pistols in there.

Bump in the night, I would grab the 12ga and my XD9.

Don't think I would grab a rifle in 7.62x39 or .308 for a simple bump in the night.

I read the thread title and got an immediate mental image:

A THRer in his pajamas, scratching his head while he looks over his large gun collection, trying to decide which gun is just right for this bump in the night.

While he is pondering, the bad guy breaks down his bedroom door and kills him with a 2x4.

12 gauge..#4 buckshot....#6s rabbit loads would prolly work just as well in a close range environment.I would have to use something expandable and frangable if I used a centerfire rifle or handgun.

12 is where its at. Mine is stocked with 2 #4s backed by 00s with slugs in the side saddle.

You guessed it! I keep the 870 and the P7 beside the bed. The HK 93 rests comfortably in its case. The 870 is just handy as hell with the top folder and the flashlight.

While very deadly the 870 just does not have the necessary level of “Oh ?????†factor the HK or AK would have to a would-be burglar or home invader.


Plus the sound of the bolt closing on the ole HK or AK, the loud unmistakable cry of “Jihad Jihad Jihad!!!†or “For The Glorious Revolutionâ€!!!

Then the walls and doors begin to disintegrate around the intruder as 30 to 40 rounds of FMJ go flying.

Damn I need another AK!!!

Shotgun has the light and is point and click. HK and AK might end up killing the neighbors. I'd go with the 870.

A 12ga. pump is the one I grab first,
It sounds like the wrath of God comming down on em when ya chamber a shell at 3:00AM.
They forget all about the radio they have 1/2 out of your dash....
