I have a Savage 10FP in .308 and mounted a Bushnell Elite 10x with EGW 0 MOA base and Burris XTR low rings last night. I noticed when just placing the bottom half of the rings on the base that there is a small amount of movement forward and backward, even with the mounting screws tightened. I went ahead & mounted the scope, tightening the screws on the top half of the rings & again tightening the screws holding on the base. Overall, it seemed tighter, but i'm still getting back & forth movement with the rings on the base (now with scope mounted). It isn't a lot of movement, but enough that I noticed.

I read the instructions that came with the XTRings & have the screws on the LEFT side of the rifle, per the instructions.

So... is this normal? Maybe I just need to tighten the rings to the base more?

Thanks in advance.

I had the same "problem" and searched around online to see if anyone knew what the deal was. Turns out those base nuts on the XTR rings need to be really torqued down. While finger tightening you'll get to a point where it seems like it's all the way down, put it's really just meeting some resistance and you'll get past that if you apply more force.

I'd get some pliers (and maybe or towel or something, if you're worried about scratches) and crank those suckers down. Make sure the bases are pushed as far forward in the slot (on the base) as possible before tightening them.

Once you get things figured out, I'd also consider loosening the nuts a bit and putting some blue Loctite on the threads, then cranking them down again (unless you plan on removing the scope in the near future).

You're correct in putting the nuts on the left-hand side. This is because there's a relief cut on the underside, where the ring mates with the scope base, and the other side is rounded. If you put the nuts on the other side, it wouldn't have good contact and could shift.

Thanks Effigy. I was curious if i just needed to secure them tighter, they did seem to firm up a bit once I mounted the scope.

I had 1 set of them in which there was a problem with 1 base. If you notice the crossbolt has a notch in it. The notch was not oriented properly. I pressed it out, aligned it and pressed back in. I used a parallel to align it. Never had them move on the base when snugged. They do if loose. I have an EGW base also. Once tightened (mildly) no movement.

This may be your problem. The XTR ring has a 'flat' cut in the cross screws, the remainder of the screw in round. The 'flat' needs to be up against the face of the rail slots. It's normal to have some front to back movement, just hold the ring to the front and tighten the two nuts, these do not need to be gorilla tight, 35 inch pounds is plenty.
