I got my new Field and Stream magazine in the mail a couple of days ago and they have interviews in it with both Bush and Kerry. They talk to them mainly about conservation and they ask some pretty in-depth questions but they also talk about gun issues.

Bush seems to mostly be a fisherman but he seems to have a decent gun collection for someone who doesn't hunt all that much aside from maybe bird-hunting a few times a year. It's evident that Bush isn't much of a shooter though when he's naming off all the guns in his safe. Here's the quote:

Bush: My favorite gun is the first gun that my dad gave me, which is a Winchester .22 pump, Model 61. Another gun that's one of my favorites isa Weatherby custom-made gun presented to me by the CEO of the company, Mr. Weatherby. I've probably got six or seven guns in a safe in my office there [note: interview took place at Crawford ranch]: two shotguns, two .22s, a couple of deer rifles and a varmint rifle. A .248?

F&S Interviewer: A .243 maybe?

Bush: A .243. I beg your pardon, a .243. Given to me by the former Lieutenant Governor of Texas, Bob Bullock, my old buddy, who on his deathbed said "I want to give you a gun."

He also says:

I love to quail hunt. You know, I'm not a very good shot - I'd be the first to admit it. But I like to be outdoors. I like the exercise. I love to watch the dogs work.

Bush never refers to Kerry at all or says one negative thing about him. The only thing was when they asked him if he could take Kerry on the skeet field he says:

I don't know. I imagine he's a pretty good shot. I don't know if he's any good or not.

This is in contrast to Kerry's interview where he attacked Bush several times and gave reasons why he thinks he's "better than Bush."

They asked him some tough questions (as they did Bush on the environment) about guns. They ask him what he thinks about the NRA giving him an "F" rating throughout his senate career.

Here's his response:
Yeah because the NRA has a silly kind of methodology that doesn't make any sense. I'm a gun owner. I'm a hunter - I've been a hunter all my life. But I vote for reasonable things. I mean, I just think the Brady Bill is reasonable They [the NRA] score that a zero. Having assault weapons reasonably regulated is intelligent. I mean, I've never thought about going hunting with an assault weapon of war. If you want to wield one of those, then go join the military.
I think you can protect the rights of sportsmen, protect the rights of people to bear arms. I believe in the Second Ammendment. You know, we've had these laws on the books for 10 years or more: Nobody has ever tried to take anyone's guns away. It's just the phoniness, an absolute phoniness to the arguments they make.
I have the complete intention of protecting the rights of sportsmen. In fact, I think I'm better for the rights of sportsmen than George Bush.

He goes on to say:

I'm never going to vote to take away guns. I never have. I never sponsored anything to suggest that. But at the same time with the right to own a gun comes responsibility.

Wow...doesn't he see the contradiction there?!

Bush talked about his stand on guns too...typical BS that we all know...supports the AWB, says it should be extended but not expanded. Also says "The best policy is to find and prosecute those who commit crimes with guns." Favors the instant background check.

As usual, despite saying things I don't like to hear such as supporting the AWB, Bush came off like a sincere guy giving an open, honest interview and Kerry came of like an arrogant ass.

One more thing - Bush also mentions that Cheney is a great shot and that he shoots a lot.

As I said, they both talked heavily about environmental and conservation issues as well but I'm pretty much just addressing the related gun stuff. Kerry also dogged the NRA and chastised them for referring to the ATF as jackbooted thugs.

This is the October issue of F&S.

Bush is consistent. I heard one interview in which he said his favorite gun is his Weatherby Athena 20 gauge (if I had the money to buy one, I bet it'd be my favorite gun, too ;) ).

Kerry's favorite gun is his Vietnam-era M16, which he used in Vietnam. Did he mention he served in Vietnam?

I read both interviews.
The one with Kerry gave me a queasy feeling. I don't feel like I can believe much he says beyond, "I'm John Kerry."
He voted to ban .30-30 ammo not too long ago. That is a gun grab in slow motion IMO.

I was unhappy with Presidents Bush's answer on the AWB and on some other gun stuff. Congress can keep those things off his desk like they did the AWB.

Bush/Cheney '04.

It may seem funny but the thing that caught me as real odd about Kerry's interview, well really it was all odd (did you know I was in Viet NAm??) was when asked what his biggest deer was he responded "Oh, I don't know. Probably an 8 pointer, something like that" Maybe it's just me but I can tell you when, where, what and with what I shot my best white tail and so can most of the hunters I talk to. "I don't know" is not an answer I would expect to get from a life-long deer hunter. I'm suprised his biggest deer isn't "seered" into his memory:)

me too, but like someone else said, when Bush says something I usually feel like he's actually giving his opinion. When Kerry says something, It always sounds like he's pandering and condescending. Maybe this means Bush is just a better speaker than Kerry (lol the dems would love to hear that) or that I'm just a sucker, but that's how he comes across to me.
As for the AWB, Bush seems (to me) to have the opinion that it's not a bad idea (which bothers me), but he doesn't think it's a big enough deal to fight for it. I can understand that since I feel the same way about a few issues. Maybe he just realizes that the AWB is relatively insignificant from a practical standpoint (although it'd be nice if he realized the symbolism) and figures it may shut the gun grabbers up if he is put in a situation where he has to sign or veto it.

It's very irritating that every time Kerry says that "I support the second amendment" he says right after that "I've hunted all my life". This kind of Orwellian double-speak is aimed at diluting the meaning of the second amendment. I can't believe that the Founders were gravely concerned about our rights to poke deer. Not acceptable.

Also, he definitely speaks like someone who's not a deer hunter. He says his biggest deer was an 8 pointer...as if that somehow tells you how big it is?! This is a common thing with people who don't know much about deer. Sure, it's more desirable to bag a nice 10 pointer but what hunter when asked how big their deer was ever says "It's an 8 pointer." Well, was it a big 8 point or a little 8 point? Then he goes on to say "But I once had an encounter with an incredible buck - I don't know 16 points or something. It was just huge. And I failed to pull the trigger at the right moment."

Whatever, Johnny.

That's exactly what I was telling Zastrina. I can tell you about every deer I've ever shot. (Admittedly, a relatively short list) Bush, OTOH, definately was able to go into some detail on his "biggest Fish" story. I would trust him a lot more to protect hunters interests.

I'll admit to being a bit disappointed on his AW stance. But, if he doesn't see a bill sitting on his desk, I don't think he'll look too hard to find it.

Can ANYONE here picture Kerry pulling out his Buck knife from the sheath, getting down on his knees and field-dressing a deer???

Heck, I can tell you about all the small game shots, big fish and varmints that I have encountered too.

Ever since Kerry said "I crawl around on my belly with a double barrel shotgun hunting deer", I knew he was a total phoney pandering to the "hunting crowd".

All this discussion of hunting is taking the focus away from John Kerry's Vietnam service, which is obviously the critical issue here.

I can't. I would imagine that there is a person guiding for him that would get the job. I'm not so sure that the guide wouldn't have also been who placed the shot to down the deer. Just my thoughts.

He'd be a good hunter regarding his Vietnam service.

If someone wounded a yearling, he could chase it down as it fled and shoot it behind a hut!

I read both the Field and Stream and Outdoor Life interviews. As pointed out above, whether you like Bush or not, he comes out much more sincerely in both interviews. When they ask the questions about personal hunting and fishing experiences, you KNOW Bush is an oudoors guy. I liked Bush's quote when he talks about him and Cheney fishing and he said Cheney was fly fishing while he was, "bubba- baiting." :)

I was amazed at how negative and arrogant Kerry was in the Field and Stream interview. It was just talking points and attacks. I just didn't see any sincerity or "realism" in his hunting and fishing anecdotes. He was a bit less negative in the Outdoor Life interview, but what bugged me about that one is he kept saying he'd, "never take anyone's rifle or shotgun away from them." No mention of handguns, and the only semi-autos he mentioned were semi-auto shotguns. It was almost like he was referring to Brady Campaign literature crib notes when he was giving his gun views.

Too bad they didn't ask him about hangun hunting. I wonder how he'd respond.
