Heckled Dubya 'loves free speech'

Canberra - Two senators opposed to the United States-led invasion of Iraq heckled the American president when he spoke to Australia's parliament on Thursday, but George Bush shrugged it off, smiled, and won applause by saying: "I love free speech."

Both minority Green Party lawmakers, senators Bob Brown and Kerry Nettle, were ordered out of the chamber, but refused to leave.

The son of a terrorism suspect being held by US authorities at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba was removed from the public gallery.

Brown was the first to interrupt Bush, as the president said people should be happy that Saddam Hussein's regime had been toppled in Iraq.

When a parliamentary official motioned for Brown to leave, he shook his head and sat down.

When Bush paid tribute to Australia for promoting peace in south-east Asia, Brown shouted: "But we are not a sheriff."

It was a reference to Bush's recent comment that Australia was a lawman in the war on terrorism.

The comment apparently was intended to portray Australia as being on equal footing with the US. Instead, it reinforced sentiment among some Asian nations that Australia was an agent for the Bush administration.

When Nettle shouted protests about the war in Iraq, Bush sipped water, smiled broadly and said: "I love free speech" to applause from government lawmakers.

Many members of the main opposition Labour Party share Brown and Nettle's anti-invasion sentiments but had been ordered by leader Simon Crean to behave during the speech.

Some legislators made a muted protest by remaining seated during a standing ovation at the end of the speech.

Earlier, 41 opposition lawmakers signed a letter criticising Bush's decision to invade, saying it had been conducted on the basis of a clear and present danger in Iraq that didn't exist.

The son of Australian terrorism suspect Mamdouh Habib was ejected from the public gallery, though it wasn't clear what the son, an invited guest of the Green Party, had done to get thrown out.

Habib is being held without charge at the US base in Guantanamo Bay on suspicion of training with al-Qaeda.

As Bush arrived, his entourage was greeted by several thousand noisy demonstrators, banging drums and carrying signs that said: "Bush Go Home," "Go back to Texas" and "Osama bin Bush." Police held the surging protesters about 100m away from where Bush entered the building.

White House press secretary Scott McClellan said Bush had been warned by Australian Prime Minister John Howard to expect some heckling by anti-war lawmakers, adding that Brown later thanked Bush for listening to his protest.

"That's the Australian parliament for you," McClellan said, adding that Bush had felt warmly received.

Later thousands of protesters marched to the US Embassy and a few scuffled with police as they tried to break through security barriers.

There was no immediate word on arrests.

The protesters then marched to Howard's official residence, where the prime minister was hosting a barbecue for Bush.

Campaign Finance Control is a bald-faced attack on political free speech. One only speech protected by the first amendment.

So if he loves free speech, how come he sign the most blatant attack on free political speech in my lifetime?

Amazing, given how many Australians died in the bombing in Bali...
They're just not smart enough to see how alienating all of the countries of the world who could actually help us track down these vermin is a path to preventing such future loss of life.

Never accuse people of being soft on terrorism just because they are disputing a plan of action that is hopelessly flawed.

Well, I hear ya, and don't take this as any kind of Bush supporting, but...

if the Australian Green Party is anything like our own, ANY type of military action, be it against Satan himself, is a big no-no. Guessing they are the the "we bring it on ourselves with our racist policies" types.

So, I would guess that, whether they support Bush or not, the Aussie Green Party is "soft" on terrorism....

Please, folks from Oz, correct me if I'm wrong....

You are absolutely correct, my friend.

Oleg's rules and hospitality prevent me from even starting to tell you what an arrogant, self-centred fruit loop of a drongo Bob Brown is (in my opinion anyway).

He is also virulently anti-gun. Here's a media release from him:

Handgun Ban Failure

26th Apr 03

On the eve of the Port Arthur massacre anniversary, Greens Senator Bob Brown says the Prime Minister’s supposed ban on semi-automatic hand guns announced last year is headed for failure.

“Last year, under a compromise with state Government Premiers certain handguns were restricted and a buy back scheme planned,†Senator Brown said.

“However what wasn’t revealed at the time is that many handguns would escape the ban altogether.

“The Government still can not produce a list of those guns which are to be banned but handguns with a barrel length over 120 millimetres containing less than 10 shots will be allowed to be kept.

“When the buy back scheme comes into place many gun owners will trade their shorter barrel handguns for something with a longer – and more accurate - barrel length.

“While each state government is meant to have legislation in place by July, no state has passed any law and only Victoria and Tasmania have outlined their plans.

“The Prime Minister has got to get tough with the states and make sure semi-automatic hand guns get the same treatment that semi-automatic rifles received after the Port Arthur massacre,†Senator Brown said.

“There are well over 150 000 legal handguns in Australia and the proposed ‘handgun ban’ will leave many of them, including one of he weapons used in the Monash shootings in Melbourne last October, fully legal.

This what his website has to say:

As a State MP, Bob Brown introduced many private member’s initiatives. Some succeeded, others not - regrettably, his 1987 bill to ban semi-automatic guns was howled down by both Liberal and Labor members.

Other private member’s initiatives included Freedom of Information, Death with Dignity, lowering parliamentary salaries, gay law reform, banning the battery-hen industry, and nuclear free Tasmania.

In 1989 Bob led a 5-Greens parliamentary team which held the balance of power with the Labor Government. During this time The Greens:

_- saved 25 schools from closure, instigated Local Employment Initiatives which have created more than 1000 jobs in depressed areas____
- doubled the size of Tasmania’s Wilderness World Heritage Area to 1.4 million hectares__
- created the Douglas Apsley National Park
- supported tough Labor fiscal measures to recover from the debts of the previous Liberal regime._

Bob was elected to the Senate in 1996, and re-elected in 2001. He has introduced bills for constitutional reform, forest protection, to block radioactive waste dumping, to ban mandatory sentencing, and greenhouse abatement.

Heck, that was over a year ago. They've long forgotten about that. There's more important things on the table. Like getting guns banned from private possession.

Not so, bountyhunter.....

Australia has generally excellent relations with the Muslim nations of the S.E. Asian region. The Australian's blown to bits were not the victims of these nations, but rather Islamofanatics who know no rule of law.

Actually, the majority of Australians support the idea of resisting the Islamofanatics with pro-active force, perhaps the only method that isn't 'hoplessly flawed':D.

Well put, and very charitable to the drongo as well:)
