Garrettwc,

I unload, due to living in Ohio where we aren't allowed to carry concealed or have a loaded weapon anywhere in a car. Ammo and Gun must both be locked and away from each other. I figure a 30 second drive from the parking lot to the hotel parking lot shouldn't cause a problem.

The laptop bag is used because I passed though metal detectors. No active package scanners. On Monday the private security saw it was a laptop case, then waved me through. The rest of the week they didn't bother getting out of their chair to check me. (I think someone could walk in there with a bazooka in a cardboard tube roll and no one would bat an eye.)

Once again I would state if we were still being housed at up scale hotels I wouldn't have given personal protection a second thought. The learning curve on personal protection when traveling is rather steep.

Michael.

Oops, OK that's on me. I didn't notice that your travel was in Ohio and that the law was prohibitive.

The security you experience is different from mine. In your case, the laptop bag may be the best camoflage after all. The downside still though is that potential thieves will pay more attention to you thinking you have something they can steal and convert to cash. Maybe one of those holsters that looks like a day planner, or a regular style briefcase with lots of pockets inside as an alternative.

johnny, no not paranoid. Just cautious. Yes awareness is key. It can help you avoid trouble before it starts. I do agree with you that if I knew that there was going to be trouble I just wouldn't go. And at one point in my life, I left a job for those very reasons.

However, the reality of today's world is that you might need a gun during your everyday travels. I live in a small town, but it is a short drive from a major metro area and lately the thugs have decided the pickings are easier in a town with only a handful of police on duty at any given time.

We recently had two armed robberies with multiple assailants occur. The first one was in a fast food parking lot at lunch time on one of the busiest streets in town. The second one, also in broad daylight, was in the parking lot that sits between the sheriff's office and the federal building!!

...

I would have thought that at least the Feds would have been paying attention to what's going on around them, I know how much they hate competition in emptying our pockets

Hotel doors: Managed with chain, chair, and I also keep a rubber door stop in my travel bag to wedge it shut with. If need be, stack whatever's gonna make a clatter racket near the door when it's opened.

The handgun (in such places as legal, blah blah blah) when not on my person travels in a plain zippered case that looks like a book/organizer/bible. It _can_ be locked then the situation warrants it, but the key is that there's nothing "gunnish" about it, and therefore, even when in plain sight, does not scream "probable cause", as do 98% of gun cases, most of which have gun co logos on them.
