But why....

Like stacking tires in a dumpster. Dump out and start over. Different number each time. With trail boss you wont need to care about plus or minus some tires
I was a machinist, not a mechanic so I have also never stacked tires in a dumpster. Or anywhere else. I have loaded with Unique, which some folks say meters terrible (I wouldn’t know or care) and in my experience is also very forgiving of slight variations between loads.

But remember, Trail Boss is - or was - really a pistol powder. It is #23 on Hodgdon's burn rate chart between Super Target and Super Handicap and several places faster than W231, even further behind Unique.

In .45-70 pressure builds fast, a 385 gr bullet Hodgdon book start load is already 19000 CUP, vs the usual 18000 recommended for Trapdoors.

I wonder how long Hercules/Alliant kept making Sharpshooter and Lightning for low pressure smokeless.

Well that's perfect then. A little plus or minus works for your Unique. Not a big deal just like my trailboss . Which has faded into the sunset. Stacking tires in a dumpster is the bomb. Dumping them in doesn't work.

That my spin on it as well.

If they ever do release 'TrailBoss' (my quotes) again, it won't be the TrailBoss of the past... it will be New and Improved TrailBoss, or TrailBoss 2, or TrailBessy, or something besides the old product, and I seriously doubt old data will be compatible.
I heard the plant that made it underwent an expansion and when they expanded production the part of the production line that made trail loss was removed and carted away, chopped up by the recycler.

I asked and was shot down on exactly that....
Still unchanged from this post:

That's the first I've heard of that.

I would think ADI would have just come out and said they discontinued TrailBoss, rather than the cryptic...

Trail Boss – This propellant is unlikely to be released in 2022 as there continues to be an active research and development project associated with its manufacturing optimisation.

It's also interesting to note that their last news release (posted on their website...) is from DEC, 2021. Seems like they would have posted something.... anything... in the 2.5years since.

Nothing will replace trail loss unfortunately.
I have found a lower density single base fast burning powder called CBI made by general dynamics for 155mm ignitors. About 5.3gr completely fills a 9mm case to the top and runs quite nice with 115gr bullets. Then 10gr will fill 45acp and 38spl cases to the mouth. Do not run anywhere near 10gr in either of rounds, that was just a reference as to how low density the powder is. As mine burns about as fast as universal to hp38, w231 speed and putting 10gr of hp38 in a 45acp or 38spl would be really, really bad.
A different lot may burn a little faster or slower.

I have a supply of CBI also. It is very, very fluffy and very clean burning. My lot - possibly the same as yours - burns about the same as w231 also.

I haven't tried it in 9mm, but it is really nice in 'not anywhere near full power' loads for the cartridges with large capacity cases.
Cartridges like 357 Mag, 44 Mag & Spl, 45 Colt; that sort of thing.
Excellent for casual shooting, and the price was right.

The only shortcoming is the lack of data for CBI powder. It's not the powder for a beginner.

Yeah I found it gets more consistent as case fill increases. Problem for a new reloader is knowing when to stop without published data.
