I am moving to a part of Tennessee that is rather close to Kentucky, and I am looking to buy a handgun. My question is, is there a legal issue with buying a handgun in KY and me living in TN? Incidentally, I'm buying it in KY because of the lower sales tax.

Yes, you can't do it it.

You can only buy long guns if you're an out of state resident, and even then, not all states let you do that.

Can't buy in any state anything if your from CA, NY, NJ, MA.

Tried in my hometown few years back. "Yeah no problem, fill this out, takes an hour for the background o go through... where you from?"
When I showed my Ca Drivers license he apologized and tore up the form.

Half of the websites won't even ship PARTS here! They could, just too scared.

On the contrary. You can in fact purchase any handgun from your neighboring state if it is transferred to a FFL holder in your state.

FWIH, dealers can't just tear up the 4473, rather they are supposed to maintain every last copy that they've been issued. This might not be true, and there are a number of FFL holders here who can clear this up.

Right. That's why you can download them from the internet and print them off as needed.

We're not to that level of police state, yet.

You can purchase the handgun from a KY FFL dealer, but you can not take possession of it. The KY FFL dealer will ship the handgun to a TN FFL dealer, who will process the transaction.

Federal law requires handgun purchases to be transfered through a FFL dealer in the buyer's state of residence.

I'm buying it in KY because of the lower sales tax.

That will likely be more than offset by the shipping and transfer fees (assume $35 minimum for that - $15 USPS shipping FFL to FFL, and $20 transfer fee). Once you make that decision, it doesn't matter whether the seller is "just over the line" in KY or in AK - the shipping and fees are the same.

You are also giving up the chance of making a purchase with a local dealer, who will be there to support you and help, as well as offer deals in the future. You should always consider that cost when choosing to do mail order vs. local business.

Thanks yall. I'm pretty sure there's an FFL around here somewhere, after all it is TN:)
