I'm in the market for purchasing 2 long guns. I'm in no hurrry but I'd like to complete my purchases prior to the elections (you never know what may happen next year).

I would like a decent quality AR (not the best but also not the worst) something that can be upgraded with various attachments. Also, not sure what brands to look at (or stay away from - or what caliber to consider). Ammo costs and availability are a consideration (223, 5.56, 7.62 or .308).

Also, want to get a decent quality 12 guage pumb shotgun for home defense and/or trunk carry. This too, not the best or not the worst.

Thanks for any recommendations on brands, models, calibers and approximate costs.

I don't own either, mind you, but I've been doing some looking myself..

A couple AR15s (5.56) that I notice mentioned as good value are Stag and CMMG.

As to 12ga. pumps; Remington 870p and the Mossberg 500.

Best o' luck!

as far as a shotgun goes Sylvan nailed it. the rems and moss's are the best as far as durablity and action for the price. you can pick up a used 500 for about 150,extend your tube for 20 bucks and shorten your barrel and you've got not only a bad ace looking gun but a gun that holds 12+1 and you can trust your life with. the 590 is also a great gun but you pay a bit more for it.
as far as ar's go if you wanting a sub 1000 dollar gun you can find you a good bush master, rra,or s&w m&p , for around 8 where i live and they are bang for buck the best out there . hope this helped
