I'm going to be buying some ammo for a 300 Weatherby (Weatherby rifle), using the Nosler 180 gr. partition bullet. Anyone shot either the Federal Premium or the Weatherby load and have an opinion on which is better?
i know its not the answer you were looking for, but at the cost of wby ammo, a guy could go broke just trying to shoot enough to become proficient. the answer then, is to go w/ federal, and go nearly broke while accumulating brass, then start handloading. then you will have premium ammo at surplus prices.
The Weatherby ammo last I heard was loaded by Norma. I don't own a chrono but the Norma is supposed to be hotter than Federal. I've got an Accumark in 300 Wea. I shoot the 180 grain Nosler Federals exclusively. Get MOA out of it at 100 yards. Natchez every once in awhile has a sale on Federal 180 grain Nosler in 300 Weatherby and I stock up. However, if I were to walk into a deal on the Weatherby ammo loaded by Norma, I would buy all I could afford. Its all good. I'm saving my brass too, eventually I will reload when I get the time.
Do you have a way to measure the OAL of one of those Wby rounds you've got? I generally reload, but have had problems in finding the best bullet seating depth - I've got lots of brass, a few boxes of Nosler 180's and powder.
Sorry, no way to measure OAL. Still buying all my ammo over the counter. The only Weatherby factory ammo I have left is a couple of boxes of 220 grainers some one gave me. Its so old its got the jumping tiger on the box. I used all of the 180 grain Nosler Weatherby factory. Still have several boxes of Federal left, enough for a couple of more years. I'm sold on the Noslers, one shot and its all over with.
I don't know if you've got a Walmart near you - I was up there this afternoon and they had Federal Premium Vital Shok with the 180 gr. Sierra Gameking bullet for $21 a box. I got some. Grabbed my elk tag at the same time.
I've never tried the Sierra Gameking bullets, but I'm sure they'll work just fine.
