I see repeated on this forum a common refrain,

"I would like to own/recommend caliber X, but I never see ammo for it on the shelf."

Finding ammo online is usually easier than finding my keys and wallet, much less driving to a store and paying for gas.

Is buying ammo online illegal in some states, or is there some reason it is disliked or overlooked?

I buy most of my ammo online, especially now that Mallwart has increased pistol ammo prices.

Buying online is complicated and difficult from some states (Illinois and Mass. I know of, California may also be in that category but I believe their new awful law is on legal hold). Many sellers require you to fax in an "ammo statement" before they will send to you. Once that's done, it's like buying anything else online, fast and easy.

Volume, volume, volume.

If you're buying in bulk, the shipping charges spread out over a greater number of cartridges, thus preserving the economy of the cheaper online prices.

If it's just a box of valu-pak 22LRs, that's what Walmart's there for.

or is there some reason it is disliked or overlooked?

Any evidence to this (my accents)?

Shipping to Hawaii is killer unless you are buying in bulk. And then you have to wait for it to come over on the boat.

I love the big heavy box out at the front gate! occasionally I'll pick up a box or two in town if the price is right.

I have bought Federal Premium MatchKing from Target sports USA for 200 ct. for $219 OTD..shipped, which is a huge savings over local retailers. The price varies at times..but they have had some good prices on that caliber.

I'm becoming a major fan of online ammo sales myself. Just today, the UPS man dropped off 500 rounds of Silver Bear .223 for me from www.militaryshooters.com, for less than $120 shipped. With the internet at your fingertips, theres no reason to be stuck overpaying for ammo. With a few minutes of looking, one can compare the major sites, see who has the best deals on what you want, and often, within a week, its at your door. I ordered from militaryshooters.com on Sat...shipped on monday, on my deck today.

I buy online because I can usually get it cheaper if I buy just 2 boxes, and I can almost always exactly find what I want online. Not so in stores.

The only reasons I DON'T buy online is if I need 1 box of something, or wally is blowing out whats left.

If you shop around you can find some great deals on ammo.

Besides, the UPS or Fedex truck showing up with ammo is like having Christmas morning all year round.

I recently placed my first online ammo order.
It's due to be deliverred UPS today.
Had no problems at all.

I generally deal with ammunitiontogo.com and have never had any issues. They are about 70-100 miles away but I get 'em to ship to me anyway. Yeah I still have to pay taxes but the simple fact that they have more selection than anything other than a gunshow, and even then they have them beat sometimes makes it worth it.

Sportsmansguide will price match. I forwarded them usarmory.com's $238/2160 rounds price. Toss in a $15 gift card and free shipping for renewing my guide membership early and you get the 10 cent/round price.

I just got 100 rounds of American Eagle 50BMG off Gunbroker for 250.00 delivered. Good price.
