ammo quick fix?

BTW, do any bricks-and-mortar retailers* carry the 7.5x55 Swiss ammunition, or do you have to buy it online? I'd love to pick up 20 rounds for this weekend, before buying the GP11 bulk pack...

*Around here, we have the usual suspects: BassPro, Gander Mountain, Sportsmens Warehouse, Gart Sports, etc. Cabelas is apparently opening early next year.

I would go and see if any of your local gun/pawn shops carry any of that 7.5 ammo....just to be sure. Otherwise, just get it online, it's pretty cheap. Also, gunshows will have it for pretty cheap, too.(try gunshows-usa.com to find a gun show near you)

Locally, buy the brass WOLF brand 7.5, loaded by Prvi Partizan it's good ammo and the case is reloadable unlike the Berdan-primed GP11. For the GP11 you won't find it any cheaper than Aim or Dan's ammo. Even with shipping you'll pay a lot more at a local show or gunshow.

weaselchew - I purchased the only one that the Water Works had. The Natrona Heights store had one but the metal had some surface rust. You might want to try Monroeville. They usually have a good selection. The sale ends on Saturday 11/4 and they specified no rain checks.

So I take the butt plate off as you guys suggested. I found a tag. These aren't like golden tickets right? It reads as follows:

On front -
Martin Adolphe
29
Cp EM. Fus Mont 6
Etagrieres

On back -
881 560

To me, this is the coolest thing ever with a firearm. I collect mostly mil surp and often wonder where whatever I've purchased had been.

Why would the letter be in French instead of German?

I guess he could still be alive. He'd be 77 this year.

Any idea what the Cp Em. is?

Fus Mont 6 - I have been able to gather this much so far - 6th mountain infantry.

I wish american surplus weapons all came with a tag....it truly is neet to know whos rifle that you now own and what kind of unit he was in. To know who took care of it, where most of the scuffs came from, that it was his cleats that chew the stock...and how he was freezing his rump off when it got the snow/water stains...to me it helps bring the rifles history to life.

Over on the Swiss rifle forums there are a number of threads about tracking down the previous owners. I tracked down the son of the fellow who had my last K-31. He was confused :D Some folks have gotten great responses, though. The Swiss are a little surprised to find Americans writing them about their old "Carbines."

I went to all 3 Dunhams around here. I went to the first 2 on Friday, both had 3 K-31s. I also went to one this morning that had 2. All of them were $149.99. None of them knew anything about a $99.99 sale, these looked to be on sale from $199.99 down to $149.99. All were beech, and the stocks were pretty beat up.

I'm debating on if I should hold off and keep looking at Dunhams and see if I can score one for $99.99 or if I should get my C&R and get one for $149.99 with a walnut stock. (plus shipping)

Take your time and do a face to face at gun shows and then you can see for your self the stock. You can pick and choose. Get diopter sights. The front sight looks too wide for my taste and completely covers the 10 ring.

don't forget to look at online acution sites. i got my k-31, an absolute gorgeous specimen, for a decent price considering the condition.

Not to single you out or to be critical of your tastes as everyone is different, but I've heard this problem mentioned several times before by others as well.
I took out my calipers and measured the sight on a K-31 and on a M1- the M1 actually has a front sight that is a few thou wider, the distance to the shooter's eye is the same.

For target shooting, a front sight that is as wide as relative to the bullseye makes for easier shooting. You get better alignment whether you use a 6 O-Clock or a center hold, as the edge of the bullseye will align fairly close with the edge of the sight.

There is a pretty big gun show (supposed to be 1200 tables) coming up in the second week of December. I may wait and see what's there for K31s.

I'm slightly discouraged though, since the show I was just at only had 2, and they were ~$300 each... in as good as or slightly better condition than the $150 Dunhams K31s.

CLASSICARMS.US AND SAMCOGLOBAL.COM and AIMSURPLUS have both beech and walnut. I just got a walnut stock one from Classic, but have not yet made it to the range. I would rate the blueing 95 out of 100 and the stock an 85. The barrel is marked under the front sight SAMCO. I rate the Bore 100 out of 100. SPORTSMANSGUIDE.COM shipped me both milsurp GP11 and Hornady 7.5x55. Can't wait to try it out.
