I will be mailing in my C&R App Monday or Tuesday. What is the expected time frame I should expect to receive my license?

mine took like 3 weeks. pretty quick for a bloated gov bureaucracy and US Snail mail.

i got the C&R in 3 weeks, and the books like 2 weeks after that

Your license will arrive in a light blue or light green envelope. It looks like junk mail - be careful not to throw it away. You'll get a separate package of books from them as well.

So you really couldn't use the license until you have the books, right? Or can you just write down the information and put it in the books when you get them?

Took forever to get mine, like 3 months...

All the books and everything arrived at the same time.

I sent off for my C&R during the first week of June 2008 and had it back by the first week of July (the license itself was marked "July 1"). I'd say the turn around time was about three weeks plus mail (the ATF office is in Atlanta and I live in FL).

For whatever reason, some people get it back within a month, and for others it takes several months. There seems to be no rhyme or reason for it - perhaps it's just luck of the draw tied into the way they process things (e.g. this batch from this state first, this state second, etc).

As far as the paperwork is concerned, I had that maybe two days after submitting a request - it was sent priority mail from GA, apparently the same day or day after I put in for it. Two weeks seems like an awfully long time.

The books describe the various statutes which govern the C&R license and firearms in general. The important thing to know is that you need to keep a record of any transactions conducted with the C&R license and format it in a certain way ("Acquisitions and Disposals;" i.e. the "bound book"). You can find plenty of info about that online; it's not hard. :)

Oh, and unless something has changed, the ATF cannot forcibly visit/search your premises - only audit your records. You can bring your bound book to one of their offices for review if they request (err, demand) an audit. They must also notify you in advance.

"Is it normal for me to be waiting 2 weeks to get the paperwork? Should I re-request the paperwork?"

I'm at about 3 weeks for the apps...

Where do you go to get the application to apply?

http://www.atf.gov/dcof/index.htm

-Click this link
-On the right hand side, select: F 7CR (5310.16) - Application for License (Collector of Curios and Relics) Under 18 U.S.C. Chapter 44, Firearms
-Click "Add" at the top of the right column
-Fill out your personal information on the left side of the page
-Click "Submit"

The ATF will mail you the paperwork. Send it back to them with a $30 check or money order and wait 6-8 weeks (maybe less).

I finally let mine lapse a few months ago after having it nearly 10 years. Didn't seem to see that many "got to haves" out there anymore. What are you guys seeing....and buying? Any good deals still?

Or can you just write down the information and put it in the books when you get them?
The books are just rules and regs, that sort of thing. They do not supply you with a bound book. You can download blank pages and print them out, keep them in a three ring binder.

you have to create/buy your own "Bound book" which is the only "book" the BATFE cares about. you can use your license the day you get it so long as you create/have that bound book and enter the firearm into it.

the other books they send are just a list of C&R arms. a booklet explaining how to report lost or stolen guns, and a book about state and federal law.

I just got mine today! it only took about 3 weeks! havent gotten the big packet of info yet tho.

I have had my license for 6 months. It took about three weeks. About a month after that I received the laws and other information in book form. Last week I received a CD and it had the 2009 book on it. Did anyone else recieve a CD from BTAF?

I've had a C&R for ten years or so. I got the CD-ROM this year. I have used a bound-and-sewn essay book by Mead, available at any school supply store. I also use this as a folder for all the receipts and bill-of-sale associated with C&R AND personal firearms. Works for me!

If you find yourself waiting longer than a month, something has gone awry and you should check back to find out why. Three weeks is about average in my neck of the woods, at least, with the supporting material arriving a week to 10 days afterward.

I, too, received the CD-ROM from the ATF titled "State Laws and Published Ordinances: Firearms." It's not exactly riveting reading, but it could come in handy, especially for out-of-state purchases and sales.
