I understand that I am required to include the name and address of the Chief Law Enforcement Officer, is this the home address or the address at the police station?

I assume that the copy I send to the Chief of Police will be OK to have an attached note saying something like, "Per BATFE regulations I am sending you this copy of my application for a Curios and Relics Firearms Collector License. No action is required on your part; the papers are strictly for your own records." Am I correct in this?

I sent mine to the police station, ATTN to the CLEO. My reasoning: If I was the CLEO, I'd be creeped-out having folks send stuff to my personal address.

The Police Station.Your CLEO is your city or town police chief.
If you live in an unincorporated area it would probably be the County Sheriff.
A note is fine but not necessary.Gonna end up in File 13 in most cases.

i actually have a question as well. do you have to use the license a certain number of times a year, or can you get it and never use it, and still be able to renew it?

I've never heard of a requirement to actually use it.

Good question. I just renewed mine and the form asked how many C&R firearms I aquired and if I sold any.

You don't have to use your license to be able to renew it.

Your CLEO is the chief of whoever would come to the door if you called 911.

His business address, not his personal address.

yea, i thought i had read a farely vague statement somewhere about needing to use it on regular basis or something. i would like to get one, but being a full time student/ part time worker, i have a fairly sporadic and limited budget and i may not even be able to afford to buy anything after getting it.

    edit:

thank you for the answer, i think im gonna look into applying for one.

Just to make sure, I called the PD and asked what Chief ------'s prefered mailing address was.

As far as 'using' the type 3--yes, there is some vague verbiage about actually collecting SOMETHING under the license. I would not get worried; you WILL BUY OR ACQUIRE SOMETHING to put in the log.

Honestly, (not to go off on this tangent) but any eligible C/R's you own could/should go in your log book notated as having been owned prior to the license. MUST you do so? All I can say is I did just to be safe and it made stealing them a federal crime by doing so.

A c&r firearm you already own does not need to go into your book when you receive your license.

A previously owned c&r firearm only needs to go into your book if you dispose of it while your license is in effect. At that time, log it into your book as "from prior collection," and then log it out normally.

No, but there is that vague 'collecting activity' if no other source exists. That and the aforementioned rationale is all I intended to point out. I have yet to figure out a negative FOR listing pre-license C/R's in your log. In some local juristictions (local laws) the gun might otherwise be illegal but BECAUSE you are a #3 holder and have it listed, you're clean and clear (one small case in point, Willmette, IL--cr handgun under type 3 is A-OK; others are banned). But I'd like to be able to whip out my log if somehow my gear was confiscated or stolen and show a judge my log and point to how "see, judge--it's part of my federally logged collection--it's a curio. Gee, can't I have it back?

    Far fetched, sure. Maybe
