So if the ATF guy shows up and counts that I have a total of lets say 5 C&R guns and only 3 in the book

How would they even know about the other two guns?

If you get audited, you only need to show your bound book, and the guns logged in the book. You don't need to show them guns that are not involved with your C&R license.

The main problem I have with the c&r is the ambiguity of the regs. If ammo is no longer under scrutiny, then they should have been able to drop it from the regs in 20 years time. It was left there for a reason. The regs state that the atf is allowed to come no more than once a year to inspect my stuff. It may never happen in my lifetime but there is the possibility that the inspection will be abused especially if rkba gets eroded. It's kind of written like tax law. No matter how many times you read the regs and how many lawyers you hire to interpret them for you, you will be out of compliance in one way or another.

My point about the ammo thing, is that it was left in the regs for a reason.

OK--my final answer

The C/R is a deal with the  .

No doubt, but there is a basic truth about all of it: the folks at the ATF are people who (generally) love guns. Now, they may love guns in the same way that librarians love books---ever notice how anxious the librarians get when someone wants to actually touch a book? I digress, but you get my drift.

ATF folks who run down C/R compliance checks probably have the least dangerous ATF job out there. Lets face it--I would LOVE a job with bennies like that and low risk--who wouldn't? If they clamp C/R folks hard, people will give up the license and not play the game anymore. For all of us it's a hobby and perk, not essential. Is the Fed gov capturing data this way--watching us and compiling a list? You bet. But then again, especially for M-1 people, Fed gov is STILL supplying rifles and bullets at low cost; To (mostly) these same people. It's more complicated than can be described by me here--my vocabulary is too small. Over a beer sometime...

Maybe I'm funny, but at some level beyond the childlike patriot acting in the man, the good Boy Scout who still wants to believe; I mean it when I run that flag up the pole in my front yard. I still woke up in America this morning.

I am doing my form at the moment to renew also. I simply left that line blank on the copy going to my CLEO.
