I'm renewing my Curio & Relic license (FFL03), which expires on May 1st. By the time I get it in the mail, that'll be in about 7 weeks.

There is a box labeled "I am requesting that a Letter of Authorization (LOA) be sent to me so that I may continue the business/operations authorized by my license until my renewal application is processed and approved." What is the practical effect of checking that box? Should I?

sounds like an option to be able to continue collecting if you get the renewal application too late and your current lisc expires before you get the new one.

I wouldn't worry about it. It only took about 3 weeks for me to get my renewal earlier this year.

I sent my renewal in over 7 weeks ago and still have not received my new license. Previous renewals took around 4 weeks. The time depends on the representative that handles your state.

Ask for the letter. It won't delay anything and might come in handy.

I submitted my initial application paper work in December and still haven't heard back.

They were sure quick to cash my check though :)

Yes. It's aimed more at 01's and the other commercial FFL's who might have to suspend business if the new license does not arrive in time.

I'm unsure if an 03 could get one, since it's for the purpose of "continuing business" and the 03 is ABSOLUTELY PROHIBITED from engaging in "business", and is only allowed to sell and trade to further the enhancement of their collection, period. (i.e. you can sell a couple of expensive Mausers, because you can get a bunch more Mosin Nagant's with them, etc.) However, even if the ATF would issue the letter I doubt many of the wholesalers would know what to do with it or sell to you in the meantime.

The one common thread as an 03 C&R FFL holder you'll notice is that dealing with the ATF and it's forms and publications is that they love to bombard you with information that's pertinent to ALL the various types of FFL's. That causes you to see lots of scary looking information and requirements for the other commercial FFL's that often don't apply to you as a C&R 03 holder.

BATF will issue a letter to an O3 FFL and the wholesalers will honor it.

Technically, you don't need one since your license is valid for 90 days after expiration IF you submitted your renewal application before your license expired. All the letter does is give written confirmation that your renewal application was submitted in time.
