CA Ain't So Bad Anymore....Picked up my CCW Today!!!

There is nothing that is going to press the trigger except my finger. Having it in your waistband of blue jeans pretty much protects the trigger just like having it in a holster. If someone tries to grab my Glock out of my pants just like someone would have to try and grab it out of the holster, I already did something really wrong to get that point and again, it is going to be rather hard to get to the trigger while it is in my pants and I am punching them in the head or stabbing them with my knife. When you go to draw from concealment in this fashion now that I think about it, I can't get my finger on the trigger until I get the gun out of my pants.

Tomorrow I will unload the gun and see if I can manage to get it to dry fire while in my pants. I think it is going to take a lot of work to get it to happen. I will report the results.
 
Hey you Orange County guys... join CRPA and come to the annual banquet in Irvine. Last year the sheriff of Orange County and San Bernardino were both there. Both said they are encouraging CCW and rarely turn down requests.

CAPTAIN MIKE, I'm glad to hear you say that, but I've also been told the opposite. Since I live in San Diego, I would like to believe you. What makes you think San Diego is reasonable? The manager of the range I go to said he is considering not renewing because it is such hassle (not to mention expense) and he runs a gunshop! How much more 'need' can you have, and how much more proof of competence?
 
I live in in Alameda county in the bay area here in CA, and getting a CCW is just not possible. unless you're someone important and connected.

I'm allowed three, but I decided to stop at one. I think it was an extra $25 to qualify for each and then there were extra fees on the OC end for putting them on the permit. Since I'm only going to be carrying with this permit until around August (most likely), I only left it at my CZ-PCR.

I went to the CRPA banquet with Skunkabilly two years ago, I believe. It was pretty cool to hear the Kern County Sheriff speak.

Are you sure? Up in these parts they don't care what handgun you qualify with. I have lent my handguns to friends to go take the course. I qualified with my Glock and for no extra charge put my Taurus PT92C and Colt 1911 on there as well (and those two guns are in my dad's name not mine!). Very interesting.

However, you got it right, it doesn't matter. In fact I think shooting my 1911 and my 9mm hurts me more than it helps. The more I shoot the little Glock 27, the better I get with it. If I then switch over to the other two guns, I can't shoot worth a darn. The Glock is the most comfortable and easy to carry and I shoot best with it. Why mess around with other guns?

Interesting. I need to dig up my original DOJ paperwork, but if I remember correctly the max number of firearms is four, which can be limited to any number less than that the issuing agency wants.

Originally I had four and then the last time I had to reapply I found that the FTO of the local sheriffs department, the deputy that runs the quals, had lowered the number to two firearms. I asked him why on the range day and he said that you should train and carry the same pieces every day, thereby limiting the amount of transition training needed and concentrating your skills to just those. Sort of like the old “beware the man who carries only one gun- he probably knows how to use it.†Or something like that.
 
Interestingly enough the state CCW laws don't designate how many weapons are allowed on the permit. Each jurisdiction does it differently. The common theme is that there are 3 lines to list the guns and their calibers and serial numbers on the form/permit so 3 often becomes the number allowed by default. More or less than three is not uncommon.

I don't pay anything extra to have more than one gun on my permit, however I am required to qualify with each of them. It doesn't matter what ammo I use when I qualify, although I know of one area that allows only one gun and it must be qualified with using carry ammo then that's the only ammo that can be carried.

I wish there weren't any restrictions on the number of guns. Three works out pretty good though as I've chosen a gov't model 1911, an officers model and a Kahr PM9 for pocket ankle carry. This lineup gives me a lot of versatility. I also like that I have another weapon already on my permit should something go wrong with one of them that requires time to repair.
 
My county only allows 2 guns on my CCW no extra charge, but I think they may have just upped that number to 3.

Also from what I understand, anything that the ATF/DOJ considers a "handgun" can legally be used as a CCW. Heard a rumor of a guy down in SD that registered his HK SP89 "pistol" as his CCW peice. Imagine if you were pulling that out of your holster. :evil:

That’s not exactly how I remember it, but Carona did say something about increasing the number of permit holders in Orange County. Maybe this will be my year.…

Rojo, have you even tried a good holster with a proper belt?

Yeah once or twice. I am in this "if it ain't broke don't fix it" mindset. That style has been working quite well for me so I am not in a big hurry to change it. If I were going to get a holster, I would get IWB. I just find it is superior for concealing with my type of clothing (jeans & a shirt). Just haven't taken the time or the money to look around.

I tried to order, but Paypal wasn't working. I then tried calling, but there was no answer. Sorry, but they just lost a sale.

I then went with a Comp-Tac C-TAC because it's adjustable and got good reviews. I figure that I wouldn't have to buy a "box of holsters" if I can get the C-TAC to fit the way I want it. I ordered it on Sunday, so I hope to be getting it soon.

Sports were a big deal, but it isn't what UCLA is known best for. USC can have all the championships and Liberty Bells they want, we've got the better academics. :neener:

UCLA means Under Construction, Limited Access. Anyone who has gone to school there understands that.

PS: You are right, though about the 'hood around University Park. It was once an upscale neighborhood, about 1915, but now it is pretty scary. On campus it is very peaceful. Walk past Exposition Park and you had better run...
 
There is no bitterness here. I only had to borrow $7500 to do my two years at UCLA. How much do you think the average SC student has spent? Oh wait, nothing, they use their trust accounts.

Remember, a trojan is good only once, a Bruin lasts forever. :neener:
 
Some basic outlines of Orange County, CA CCW permits:

-they are issued by the Sheriff.

-The best way to qualify for one is to own a business.

-The next best way is to be an "Avid Shooter" - document that you shoot at a range at least 2-3 times a week.

-Be prepared to wait 2 months or more for the required background check.

-Other stuff includes: take a 16 hour class where you qualify with up to 3 weapons; be interviewed in person at the Sheriff's dept. to explain why you need a CCW; have your fingerprints "Live Scanned" at the Sheriff's Dept. for a small fee; your weapons must be "safety inspected" with no less than a 4 lb. trigger pull by the Sheriff's armorer; and probably a couple more things I forgot about.
 
Anybody tried to get a CCW in El Dorado County in the PRK? We are a pretty conservative county, but I'm relatively new in town and have not yet explored the options.
 
Sorry to hijack the thread but... I remember someone on this forum or TFL saying that in some counties (I think he said Auburn) if you are denied once anywhere in the state, you will automitaclly be disqualified for CCW. Anyone know if this is true? I want to apply but I am a young man and I think the sheriff might be more obliging once I am older and settled down with a family etc. I don't want to ruin any future chances.

By the way for those of you who see my location and laugh outloud, I am not going to apply in SF. I am also a resident of Napa and Sonoma counties and would apply there. Anyone have tips for those counties?
