Aw, crap. Well, watch for the calls for restrictions on shotguns, now, and people demonizing them as evil. :barf:

Need to buy a folding-stock for mine before someone tries for a ban...

Police: Downtown shooter kills 1, wounds 4

ELK GROVE, California (AP) -- A man with a 12-gauge shotgun went on a shooting spree along a busy downtown street, killing one person and wounding four others before a deputy shot him, officials said Sunday.

Authorities said Aaron Norman Dunn, 28, randomly shot at people, hitting three, as he walked down the street Saturday night. Two other people were injured by glass when bullets hit their car windshields.

Dunn, who is being held on suspicion of murder and attempted murder, was in critical condition at a hospital, said Sacramento County sheriff's Sgt. R.L. Davis.

The first victim was shot in the head as he sat in his car with his wife and two children in front of a restaurant, Davis said. He was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

Dunn sped away in his car but crashed down the road, then continued on foot, shooting several rounds, Davis said.

A man was shot in the face and died, while another man was then shot in the back, Davis said.

As two sheriff's deputies confronted the shooter, one shielded an injured victim with her body to protect him from being shot again, Davis said. Then one of the deputies shot Dunn when the suspect did not give up his weapon.

"It's a true test of one's fortitude to put oneself in that position and make that sacrifice," Davis said.

The coroner's office identified the dead man as John Johnson, 46, of Elk Grove. The man shot in the back was hospitalized, but no information about his condition was immediately available.

Davis declined to identify the deputies, except to say they were both women -- one with four years on the department, the other with six years.

Both deputies were placed on paid administrative leave, as part of routine procedure, pending an internal investigation, Davis said.

So what, they'll just pass more gun control. And maybe some more laws against murder too.

As for that particular situation, there was nothing we can do to preemptively stop crazy people from arming themselves and shooting people. The guy is dead, so the problem is as solved as it is going to get.

And maybe some more laws against murder too.

No, no...the murderers are victims of society, you see, and need to be treated, pampered, "understood" and released again onto the street. :barf:

It's the GUNS that are evil, that's what they'll say. Again.

next law will probably be 'no shotguns allowed in moving vehicles'. That will stop these gun owning idiots from transporting their evil instruments of death in to public places so they can go on shooting sprees. :barf:

Well it's clear to me that the gun is the root of all evil. And if you take that away and write another "murder is illegal" law and word it properly people won't get murdered anymore. oNe more law might be the magic number to end all murder.</sarcasm>

So will Sheriff Baca issue me my permit now? "I need this permit because it is well-established that there are crazies out there who go on killing sprees sometimes, and none of our laws will ever stop them from getting guns, but they can be stopped by armed honest citizens like me."

I am sorry for the victims and victims families.
Kudos to the deputies.
CA can pound sand up their nose with all the gun control.

<sarcasm>

Yeah buddy, they won't come after my Skeet/Trap/Duck/Deer/Dove Shotgun - so why should I Join a Pro Gun Group, Write my Politicians, Assist other folks with RKBA...no shotguns are different, they won't mess with my shotguns....

</sarcasm off>

I've said it before, I will say it again - Some Gun Owers flat disgust me, and one group just happens to be some of the Shotgunners! I used to compete with a shotgun and I stopped having anything to do with many of them and "their sport".

Feed 'em fish heads and rice I say...

When will we learn that guns are the root of all evil. Before the introduction of gunpowder in the 13th century (in Europe) no one ever died a violent death from swords, daggers, clubs, rocks, arrows, spears, fists, axes.......:banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

of course try and make that point to an ANTI.

I suggest you and a couple hundred of your friends attempt EXACTLY that.

And make the result public if you can find a media outlet that's not firmly anti.

It's exactly this kind of thing that got us CCW here in Texas.

12 gauge shotguns are "military type" shotguns and have no useful sporting purpose. Clearly...we should only be allowed to have 40 gauge shotguns :banghead:

No, Senor, this is all we need:

As for getting a group together to apply to Sheriff Baca: I would really love to do it but that kind of thing works when the media is sympathetic or neutral. That just won't work here. I'll piss off too many of the wrong people. Instead I'm going to work in Masse' campaign for sheriff. That's the best shot we have right now.

There are a few other productive things to do:

One is I need to register a domain and start a forum dedicated to nothing but CCW in California and LA in particular. There are a lot of people who care about this subject, but here isn't the right place and neither is Calguns really.

Finally, someone needs to SUE Sheriff Baca for some enormous punitive damages to force him to release the public records of current CCW holders. Then I need to hire someone to do data entry to enter in all the campaign contribution records from Friends of Sheriff Baca. He could be in deep doo doo if there is a correlation.

Oh boy!
I can hear the anti's calling for the shotgun ban soon.
Something like....
"This menacing object has just one purpose, to kill.....but understand, we're not trying to take anyone's guns away. There's just no legitimate need for this type of weapon to be available to the public...."

Sound familiar?:cuss:

12 gauge shotguns are "military type" shotguns and have no useful sporting purpose. Clearly...we should only be allowed to have 40 gauge shotguns

And if that doesn't work:

12 gauge shotguns are "civilian type" shotguns and have no useful military purpose. Clearly...shotguns are not protected under the 2nd.

Why can't we just weed out the freakin nutjobs?

Good work on the part of the deputies. I hope they both get a medal.

Oh yeah. I expect to see John Kerry don camo and go crawling around on his belly with his shotgun if anyone tries to ban them.

The liberals are out of touch with reality, they would try to ban water if given the chance.

I just received an e-mail from a friend who works with Xerox. Michael Daly, a Xerox employee and one of the wounded victims, died yesterday at 12:10 PM. Apparently, Mr. Daly was the first victim and was shot while in he was in his car with his wife & two kids.

:(
Used to teach for Elk Grove Unified. Guess it happens everywhere now. Condolences to the victims' families. These LEOs went above and beyond. Wish all had that kind of character, but also that they'd never be put in these kinds of situations.

Do you know how many people drown every year? I fully support banning water. Do it for the chilren.

(AP) ELK GROVE The Aaron Dunn, the man accused of a shooting rampage in Elk Grove that left one person dead, has been upgraded from critical to serious condition.

Authorities said Aaron Norman Dunn, 28, randomly shot at people, hitting three, as he walked down the street Saturday night. Two other people were injured by glass when bullets hit their car windshields.

Dunn, of the Yuba City-Marysville area about an hour's drive away, had recently split with his wife and became addicted to methamphetamine, his brother, Patrick Dunn said. More recently he was fired from his job as an electrician, the brother said.

Relatives Believe Shooting Suspect was High on Meth

Mark Hedlund's Report
The man suspected of a deadly shooting spree in Elk Grove on Saturday night left a chilling phone message to his sister less than an hour before the gunfire erupted on Laguna Boulevard.

Aaron Norman Dunn, 28, (shown above) called his sister in Marysville and left a message on her cell phone at 7:05 p.m., about 40 minutes before he allegedly opened fire with a 12-gauge shotgun on several strangers in different locations along Laguna Boulevard. According to his sister, who did not wish to be identified, the phone massage said, "I just want to tell you I love you. I love the kids. Tell Patrick [Dunn’s brother] I love him. I'm tired of the lies. I’ll love you to the end."

Patrick Dunn said his family didn’t get the message until 10 o’clock Saturday night. After getting the message and seeing news coverage of the shooting, he put together that his brother might have been involved. He said earlier in the evening he was visiting with his brother at their sister’s house in Marysville. He said everything seemed to be fine when Aaron Dunn said, "I need to take care of some business, I’ll see you guys later."

Patrick Dunn thought his brother left sometime after 5 p.m. Patrick Dunn said he has no idea why his brother went to Elk Grove, but he thought his brother was high on methamphetamine.

Relatives said Aaron Dunn had been depressed since he separated from his wife late last year. Dunn’s godfather, Clarence Clavelle, says family and friends are stunned by what happened. They said Dunn was never a violent person and that the rampage would have been out of character for him. Family members said they knew after the breakup with his wife, he had started using methamphetamine again. Another close friend who grew up with Dunn, Evelyn, who didn’t want her last name used, tearfully said, "It's obvious that Aaron Dunn needs help."

News10 also has learned Dunn has prior arrests for battery, being drunk in public, failure to appear in court and driving under the influence.

Dunn was shot and wounded by Elk Grove Police officers just before 8 p.m. Saturday after he allegedly opened fire on strangers outside several restaurants on Laguna Boulevard.

Police said Dunn, using a 12-gauge shotgun, fired on a man who was sitting in a car outside the Chili's Restaurant. That man was shot in the head. Dunn then headed east on Laguna Boulevard and crashed his Toyota Camry into a pickup truck. "We stopped at the stoplight, and he just hit me," said John Hodges, the driver of the truck.

According to investigators, Dunn then got out of his car and began firing his shotgun. One of the bullets shattered Stefanie Cartwright's windshield. "He picked up his gun off the ground and aimed it at us," Cartwright said.

Dunn continued firing and shot a second man in the back near a McDonald's restaurant, the sheriff's department said. Then, investigators say, Dunn shot 46-year-old Jon Johnson, who was leaving Mandango's Sports Bar & Grill with his wife. Johnson was struck in the head and was pronounced dead at U.C. Davis Medical Center.

By that time, dozens of sheriff's deputies and police officers had arrived at the scene. Two Elk Grove police officers confronted Dunn and ordered him to drop his weapon. When he refused, one officer shot him, the sheriff's department said.

Sgt. R.L. Davis from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department said Dunn was shot several times by deputies after he refused to drop his weapon after the shooting spree. Davis says, based on information from his ex-wife and witnesses, they believe Dunn was under the influence of methamphetamine.

Dunn was arrested and taken to a local hospital with critical injuries. If he survives, he could face charges that include murder and up to a half dozen counts of attempted murder, the sheriff's department said.

The two men wounded in the shooting have not been identified. One is in critical condition, the other is in serious condition. Two other people suffered minor injuries from flying glass.

So what about it California folks?

Here is your chance to do something rather than just complain.

You have an opportunity to flood a law enforcement office with requests for CHLs as a result of this and get some real attention on the problem.

It's exactly this kind of thing that got many states to must-issue.

Where is the grassroots effort? This is your chance, are any of you going to step up and try to fight this fight?

Apparantly not. No wonder California has not a chance of ever getting the law changed, no one wants to fool with it..... I am shocked that such an excellent chance to argue the matter is being allowed to go by untouched.

Especially bad in the wake of the pizza guy who went berserk at the zombie/rave party and killed those folks with a shotgun.

Because TexasSIGman...the gun culture here in California has eroded severely. If you admit to owning a gun here people look at you like you're two steps away from a rampage yourself.

When presented with the problem of "guy goes on shooting spree and kills 15" there are at least 2 ways to look at it:

the gunnie way of looking at is, "well if even 1 of those 15 had a CCW they could have stopped it too"
--OR--
a non-gunnie way of looking at it "let's try to get rid of the guns he had access to" The argument being...if YOU aren't going to own a gun, shouldn't it be as hard as possible for everyone else?

if a person doesn't own a gun him or herself they are easily convinced that the non-gunnie solution is the answer. First we have to get non-felons/non-gang bangers/registered voters armed and responsibly trained.

It was tough but far from impossible for you guys in Texas to convince a majority of gun owners that they should be able to do be armed anywhere. You've got a healthy gun culture. It's tough in a place like New York, LA, San Francisco, where the only thing people know about guns is that they killed John Lennon and were used in Columbine.

You're right in saying a grass-roots effort is the only solution to the problem, but it's a much longer road if people think guns are the problem.
