Intruder shot in deputy's home

By DAVID BRADVICA, STAFF WRITER

RANCHO CUCAMONGA - An off-duty San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy shot and wounded a burglar Friday afternoon after he broke into his residence and approached him with a long knife, a San Bernardino County sheriff's spokesman said.

The wounded burglar, believed to be a juvenile, was expected to survive after he was flown by helicopter to an area hospital, where he underwent surgery Friday night, sheriff's spokesman Chip Patterson said.

Three other teen-agers were detained late Friday as possible suspects in the break-in, Patterson said.

The shooting occurred just moments after the off-duty deputy placed a 911 call at 3:37 p.m. to report that someone was breaking into his residence in the 12800 block of Colonnade Drive, Patterson said.

The deputy, whose name was not released Friday, told dispatchers that he heard glass breaking near the front of the home. The off-duty deputy then went to the front room and found two males crawling through a broken window.

When one of the males approached him with a long bayonet-type knife, the deputy fired a semi-automatic handgun more than once at him, striking him at least once, Patterson said.

Both males ran out the front door of the residence, where two other teen-agers were waiting. All were located by deputies responding to the 911 call, including the wounded suspect, who was found in a van that the suspects had parked in the neighborhood, witnesses said.

The tract of upscale homes near the corner of Etiwanda Avenue and Base Line Road is noted for the large number of law enforcement officers who live there, neighbors said.

Another off-duty police officer captured a burglary suspect two months ago after he tried to escape through his back yard, neighbors said.

"This is the wrong neighborhood to pick on," said neighbor Ernie Murphy, 61. "We're two for two so far and I hope the word spreads."

This goes to prove that gun owning citizens can stop violent crime in its tracks, unlike just calling 911 and "give them what they want".

Where is the part about "no charges have yet been filed against the homeowner, but authorities are investigating the case ... " ?

Don't get me wrong, it was a good shoot and I commend the deputy - just have to wonder if it had not been a LEO's house that was broken into ...?

And the fault goes to the media on the double standard.

Journalism should be akin to working at a McDonald's. They should just have templates for stories. It would be fair and balanced if they used templates instead of the biased spiel that we get now.

"We're two for two."
Other neighborhoods could be as well. That one has a high percentage of LEOs, which means it has a high percentage of guns in the hands of residents.

The intruders are stupid. Too bad ALL of them still are....

"You broke into the wrong rec room."

"First rule of a gunfight: bring a gun."

Will the deputy be put on administrative leave?

Ghettowanda.

Perhaps administrative leave with pay or just transferred temporarily to administrative duties. The former is better. Fix the car. Relax and still collect $.
