I was just wondering if anyone knew offhand if there were any AR-15 (erm, ar-10, technically speaking, I suppose) lower receivers in .308/7.76mm that are CA legal.

I had a chance to shoot a friend of a friend's SR-25 in Reno a few weeks ago and absolutely fell in love...'accurate' is a complete understatement in describing that rifle. I was able to confirm that the SR-25 itself is not CA-legal (shocking), but I was wondering if there is an option for a CA-legal .308/7.76 AR style rifle. Google and forum searches didn't bring anything up.

(Also - I'm not sure whether this is technically "Legal" or "Rifles". Please move it if I guessed wrong)

7.62x51. 7.62 NATO. Doesn't help with your predicament, but at least you get the right nomenclature for the round. The DPMS is the only one I can name off hand, and I suspect that it isn't legal (just because it's CA and I have a gut feeling...its a big gut). I think there are only 3 manufacturers of .308 / AR-10 guns, and none of their lowers are compatible with the competitions uppers. Armalite is another that makes one.

My bad of the numbering - it's been a long day and I guess my brain was locking in a 5.56mm mode and just swapped in 7's...

Anyways, I know for a fact that the DPMS lower is listed in CA. I was hoping there might be some obscure one that managed to avoid the list. I couldn't find any info about it, other than to actually read through the list and check each one...I was hoping that there might be a California FFL who knows of a specific one that's available.

Thanks! Just what I was looking for. I might just wind up going with the entire POF rifle with the 20", but it's expensive. On the other hand, I'm on my Christmas break soon and will be working again for a month, so maybe I'll get myself a nice Christmas gift.

And God help us indeed. I nearly lost it when I went to pick up a box of 9mm Friday so I could go shooting with my Father when I'm visiting my family next weekend and had to give a thumbprint. The only reason I stayed in CA after high school was because of how much cheaper going to a UC over a private school was and now that's not even the case any more, with 33% fee increases.

Sorry, I could rant about California all day, but that's more than a little off topic. If anyone knows of any other .308 OLL's, please post them.

I know it may be inappropriate but have you considered moving to a state that does not call a certain brand of aluminum evil?

I have, and intend to. My parents moved to CA in the 80's for work and stayed here, but we're not rich and I have two younger sisters. The reality of the matter is that the only way for me to afford to go to college without being in debt for the rest of my life was to go to a public school, and since the UC system is so good, I stayed in CA. I love Davis, and I have a lot of opportunities here that make it worth staying for my research, but I fully intend to leave when I graduate in 2011 - I'm hoping to find work in Boston and move to Southern NH, where my family is from, since there's plenty of biotech happening there, or attend grad school somewhere on the east coast (my work right now is in the design and synthesis of semi-synthetic organic compounds that inhibit cellular reproduction), but it's not very feasible for me to give up 3 years of education and thousands of dollars of grant money just for the sake of my hobbies when I only have a year to go to hopefully conclude the project I'm working on and get my degree. It sucks, but...such is life.

In So Cal there is a store in San Bernardino Cold War Shooters, and they carry what you want, and will sell it to you in Caliofrnia. Another place to check out is Bright Spot Pawn in Riverside. They are real patriots. Iknow it's far from you, but worth it.

Another place that is good to go, in SoCal, is RifleGear in Costa Mesa.
Last time I was in there (begining of Nov), they had many CMMG AR .308 lowers (both the DPMS version and G3 verison) in stock and they just recieved a complete CA legal LWRC REPR (RifleGear is the only certified LWRC stocking dealer in CA). They are waiting on a shipment of JD Machine AR .308 lowers.

Only place I know of in Central/Northern CA, that is up to date on CA gun laws, is PRK Arms in Fresno.

Darkknight, you're referring to River City Gun Exchange in Sac? I've been there plenty (actually bought a Mossberg 500 from them), but I prefer not to shop there...I always have this feeling that my presence there is a HUGE inconvience to them or something. All the employees there except one older asian guy (who is really funny and nice) have just been really rude to me, and honestly...I put up with enough s***, I don't need that, and I don't need to support a business that condones that kind of behavior in their employees. I shudder to think of how they'd act towards people who are less clean-cut than I - I'm white, early 20's, military haircut, no facial hair, and I'm soft-spoken and college-educated. Their prices are great, yes, but I'd rather pay a 5% premium at a nicer store...I consider it a service tax.

All others - thanks for all the advice! I'll check out cal guns, I should probably be more active there regardless of this project as long as I do live here. I'm planning to drive down to LA in January to visit some friends at UCLA anyways, so I might as well make it a tour of good SoCal gun stores while I'm there!

just curious mlaustin...what did you end up getting? I'm pretty much in the same boat and was looking for an AR type that uses a .308 round. .223 seems to be popular a lot here in cali but not for me.
