I went by a Cabelas today hoping to see and handle a Ruger m77 Compact, see what the short barrel carbine compared to a regular 22" barreled M77. They had a good array of the low end Ruger Americans (not my cup of tea), I asked about M77s in stock, the clerk said he hadn't seen a Ruger M77 in a couple years but there were a few in the "gun library".... I found 5 M77s, all used with nicks in the stock, one .308, a .270, 30-06 and another in the International model in 7x57. the lowest priced was right at $1100. I asked the young salesman about the price, he said "they had a really smooth action like a Mauser".... he had no real info on why used M77s were about $500 more than a brand new one. I informed him I had bought a new M77/44 a few weeks ago and he said he didn't even know Ruger made the M77 in .44 mag. Is there something I don't know about used M77s, I realize lots of Cabelas gun staff aren't real sharp as far as firearms...really left a little angry.

In my experience, the big box stores only have decent gun prices when they are on sale. Normal prices are usually pretty close to MSRP and their used guns always seem to be priced at new gun prices.

One of my LGS has a few used M77s around $6-650. Wood and synthetic stocks, blued and stainless. The local Gander had a used one a while back for $849 IRRC. Big box stores usually have a higher price than they ought to in my experience. Academy Sports usually has some pretty decent prices, but their selection is terrible and don't have anything used.

I don't know why used ones would be so high. I paid $750 for this one two years ago, brand new. A limited run of .250's for Lipsey's that showed up with the wrong finish.

I have looked around the net, Buds has lots of M77s in stock seems like average $700, Davidsons list them at MSRPs. I just couldn't believe they didn't have any new M77s but really seemed to be pushing the Americans. Guess I'll do more business with Buds, always had great prices and shipping to my FFL.

Davidson's lists everything at MSRP. You have to select the model you're looking for and then hit the "instant quote" button. It'll list dealers in your area and their prices. Rugers almost always should go for 75-80% of MSRP.

Part of the problem is you can't just say Ruger M77 and let it go at that. You need to define which Model 77? Model 77 what? Model 77 Hawkeye for example gets it down to about 9 or 10 rifles in that family alone with a wide price range. Wood? Synthetic?

Then we have the more classic Model 77 MK II series in a wide range of calibers and stocks.

Left handed, 7mm Rem Mag.

Then there is the Ruger Model 77/44 Rotary Magazine Rifle. That rifle comes in two stock variations, sweet gun but MSRP is not quite inexpensive. Granted they can be had fo less than Ruger's MSRP.

Cabela's has both 44 & 357 and they can be ordered online for delivery to any local store. Ruger® 77/44® and 77/357™ Bolt-Action Rifles and you are looking at about $800 to $900 rifles. I suggest if you want the gun, call Cabela's, check availability, and have it shipped to your local Cabela's.

I just bought a brand new synthetic/stainless 77/44 for $675 from buds a few months ago, I own several M77s in 7MM mag, .280, 270. They did not have ANY M77s or any model on their racks. I know they come in Hawkeye, Standard, plus the models like the African for larger calibers.

I just missed out on a M77 in .257 Roberts I really should have bought from Palmetto State Armory, never done business with them, I hesitated and now they are out of stock...just my luck.

Ruger has discontinued the Hawkeye All Weather and aren't making many, if any standard Hawkeye's at the moment. They are selling the Americans faster than they can make them. It is simple supply and demand. If a new rifle isn't available then used prices will go up.

You forgot the most important M77's, the originals with the tang safety. Best M77's Ruger made by far.

Big outfitters are not stocking m77 anymore. They are stocking Americans and Axis now. For now you can go to some smaller shops and online to get your m77 run of the mill....for now. I can see a day when they are only offered in special models having been completely replaced by the cheaper American.

In Scheels awhile back there was only one or two m77 models one was the scout. None I repeat none of the standard or synrhetic stainless. Full racks of the American and Axis.
Thats one store. Also stainless synthetic is OOP.
