Calif. special 10% additional sales tax on ammo

I can see guys from Mexico strapping Aguila ammo to their backs as they come across into California now. Should be better business than drugs.

These taxes probably won't hold up. We're dealing with a constitutionally protected right with ammo.

That State is such a lost cause....It isn't even worth time on the keyboard to discuss. You couldn't triple my salary and get me to move there.

California also just passed ...

Assembly Public Safety passed it to Revenue and Taxation; R&T passed it to Appropriations. Assembly Appropriations committee has heard it and it still is in that committee; that's because almost the whole bill text was replaced in this committee.

Still must pass the Assembly Floor, the Senate Public Safety committee, the Senate Appropriations committee, the Senate Floor, and go to the Governor. There's a long way to go.

ETA - I'm used to Penal Code things that have just 2 committee steps; since this is now a Tax measure, will also need the Revenue and Taxation Committees in each house, so two more steps. They're bumping up against the May 31 deadline to pass a bill out of its house of origin.

I predict increased ammo sales in Arizona, Nevada and Oregon border towns...

Oregon maybe, the rest are quite a long drive from anywhere. Going to buy enough to make a difference you'll buy bulk and we all know how sales tax and the internet match up.

On a different note, I am glad we have TABOR here in CO or we would have gotten the same thing. They knew it would never pass a vote and would just bring their enemies to the polls though. That is why we just got "fee" to get a BG check run instead.

Glad you clarified. Seems like more to it than 'effective immediately.'

No problem for the antis, if not now, they will come back with it later, the antis like evil, never sleeps.

A lot of CA residents go to Havasu and Vegas all the time. A place that sells ammo right on the border strategically placed on that route would sell a ton.

Tax measures such as this bill need 2/3 majority. 'Urgency measures', which go into effect as soon as the Governor signs (or allows to become law unsigned) also need 2/3. So if the bill gets through all the steps, probably would go into effect immediately. Ordinarily, bills that become law take effect the following Jan 1.

The problem with states being "lost causes" is that the people in them breed, and their children leech out to other states with their anti views. If we let it branch out, it'll eventually get to your state, and affect you and your guns. It's already happened to states like Colorado.

Can't do much when the politics are so aligned. Folks there have a choice to make as I did in 1995. I was a born (1961) and raised an avid NorCal sportsman that left for a dramatic change to west Texas. About as different than some of the countries I have lived/worked since. Easy choice in words, far more difficult to pull off when all is considered. Tough times without question. Good luck to those that decide to jump.

I have relatives in Cali...I'm gonna miss 'em when their tax burden is sooo heavy that the San Andreas fault opens up and the folks in Phoenix have ocean front property.

TN has a state ammo tax; $0.10/box. I suspect it is legal. It is collected to fund conservations efforts like hunting license sales.

Well you better wait about another 2000 years for global warming to cause the ocean to rise about 500 ft because the closet part of the San Andreas fault is still about 300 miles from PHX.

And it,s sad to see some 50 electoral votes went to the Democrat. Need to change the the votes to districs like NE and Maryland do. That's the change we need.

So if you add all the CA bills together:

1) CA bans ammo containing lead for hunting (so far, a general ban thereafter wouldn't surprise).

2) CA bans buying mail order ammo and private ammo sales.

3) CA adds a 10% additional tax on ammo.

So they would render almost all of the ammunition in the state useless, you can't sell it, can't buy more except at full retail from retailers who will collect the tax.
