California lawmakers pass new semi-automatic weapons ban

Wow, Ruger 10/22 would be illegal. M1 Garand, Legal. I'd go for the M1 personally.

You may have it backwards although the M1 being a semi-auto could possibly be added to the ban list (I surely hope not). Anything greater than 22 cal. would be illegal so a Ruger 10/22 will be ok. That should give everyone in CA a warm fuzzy. I attribute the info to Cam Edwards on the NRA News on the Sportsmans Channel (at least the part about the .22).

Doesn't surprise me.
It is California and we all make fun of it for a reason.

What do you EXPECT from California?!?!?

Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And that is exactly why I'm pissed off about this. Just because the laws here suck doesn't mean we should expect that.

It's the world's 7th largest economy. There's room and opportunity for improvement. We all need to understand and embrace that, not make fun of it.

I agree with the sentiment. It just seems that not enough people in California agree with it.
Your problem isn't here - it's there.
And I have no idea how you'd even start fixing it. Sorry, but that's that.

I seem to remember in Australia when they imposed a semi-auto ban, the number of weapons turned in was less than 1/3 of the number estimated to be "in circulation", and even states with full registration still had compliance rates of less than 40%.

Suppose that in California somehow no rifles with detachable magazines get registered? Of course, you would still have the same problem as ath Australians, of where to get away with shooting for practice or fun (why do Australians oil their gardens? To keep their guns from rusting). Which is all the more reason this needs to be defeated, and not just with civil disobediance, as rightous as civil disobediance will be in this case.

Many job opportunities come up in California that I could go after..............

Fortunately I already have a job that pays the bills, and it's in a free state.
Love my home.

Here's the BIG issue, NO ONE would back me up if I lock n load and head for Sacramento. Even if all my intent to do was protest peacefully. If the law makers looked out their windows and saw thousands of armed citizens protesting,.. I think the pucker factor would be high.

Personally I think this should be planned out and done but as I've said before, no one would show up. So yes, we get the Government that's there.

I have been fighting since I was 8 years old growing up on the north shore of Long Island, New York. Back in the 1960's it was legal to buy black powder pistol kits through the mail. I finally saved enough money to buy a .36 caliber revolver kit and it was shipped to me by the distributor in NY City. No one asked, cared or required a minimum age for purchase of said kit. Somehow, the local LE found out about it, came to my house in the middle of the night and demanded that I turn it over to them. It was a totally illegal and criminal action. When my father compalined about it and went to the town mayor, no one even admitted to the act. That opened my eyes real wide!
Would that have been Suffolk County cops? I grew up in Smithtown and they were a total nightmare. As much as I miss real culture, food, etc., I am glad I moved.

Not to get too off topic but the current NICS check is not the same as requiring registration (although it's close). Currently when a dealer calls in your background check he does not give them the serial number of the firearm you are purchasing, just that it's a long gun/handgun. He keeps your form 4473 for 20 years and if they have reason to they can look up your form and find the serial number but it is more difficult than an actual full blown registration.

Work hard guys to keep your freedoms even if it's an up hill battle. And remember, the whole reason we have them is if we need to use them.

Wow.

The 2nd amendment is all but gone now, in California.

Why hasn't there been more on the legal / court side there? Aren't cases getting heard?

The link was very lacking for info.. Im sure im wrong, but wasn't the bullet button loophole the only thing keeping these guns legal anyhow?

I fully expect Jerry Brown to sign the law. Slowly but surely they are chipping away at gun rights. Hopefully, somebody with deep pockets will challenge the constitutionality of this law.

Unfortunately come January 2014 long guns purchased from FFLs will have to be registered the same as handguns are now.

I wish CA residents all the best in their upcoming struggle to make this right. I'll support you if I can. CA residents need to find a way to make there be a consequence to the politicians that are running amok.

As others have posted, when I'm looking for potential new career opportunities I simply ignore those in CA and other restrictive states.

What the hell is wrong with those people?

The anti-gun folks saw opportunity after Sandy Hook to further their agenda and they took advantage of it just like New York and Maryland. All three states have the Democrats firmly in charge. You keep electing them knowing their leanings. What can I say? But yes, I know that isn't everyone.

What really kills me is that Californians think the whole country is just dying to jump in line behind their stupid policies. Yeah we all want to have double the debt of other states and laws that would make Stalin vote Republican. Californistan should secede. I don't think anyone would object.

What's worse is that they leave their state because it's too liberal then immediately start working to make states like Montana and Colorado just as liberal. We have a constitution we all agreed to honor. Do that or get out.

Funny think is when I was growing up there (80's/90's) All they ever said back then was "we don't care about your hunting/sporting guns" well I guess they did.

"I fully expect Jerry Brown to sign the law."

I am not so sure. As a California gun owner I was so happy to see the bills that failed or were placed in the suspense files. Though a loon, governor Moonbeam is a gun owner and a shooter. He may very well veto this bill. Now is the time to go on the on the offensive and write those letters.

Californians - get to work, write the Governor now!

There is hope. Let's get to work.
