Hi,

I am setting up my new Lee Classic Turret Press and have a question about the primer holder that rides in the ram. I understand that it primes on the downstroke, and I see how that works. It seems that for the other 3 dies, it will still try to push on the primer every time you lower the ram all the way to the bottom. You are not supposed to short stroke it, right? So what gives?

What am I missing?

Thanks,

Chris

It doesn't matter if it pushes on the primer every time, but you also won't be putting much force on it once you get the primer in. You can't seat the primer too far and you can't pop the primer with it, so there's nothing to worry about.

On the downstroke when you are actually seating the primer you will have to use slightly more pressure than when you normally bring the ram down. Since the primer holder is spring loaded you will merely compress the spring on the downstroke when primer seating is not the intended operation.

This feature is common to all single station presses with a prime on downstroke feature. It is nothing to worry about. Once you get the hang of it, the use of this press is instinctive. You can put out a round about every 10 seconds with it without hurrying.

I don't bring the ram down all the way unless I'm priming anyways, but then the longest cartridge which I load on my press is a 308. I suppose for some of the really long cartridges, you might need to lower the ram all the way each time for clearance maybe?
