I have the lee classic turret and was thinking about getting the safety prime but for some reason when I put the primer thing in the ram and lower the ram it doesn't push the cup above the shell holder. is there a spring or something that needs to be put in there?

I don't have the safety prime too yet but the press came with the part that goes into the ram. I must be setting it up wrong cause the directions you linked show it just drops in.

And it does just drop in. But you can't put it in (or take it out) if the shell holder is in place.

Also my Safety Prime seemed to have a lot of trouble successfully putting the primer in the cup as the instructions have you install it. Once I added a small washer on top of the supplied black plastic spacer that comes with the assembly it puts them in the cup 100%. Looks like it needed to be just a smidgen higher.

Yep. On my single stage Lee the primer cup/arm/lever thing CAN be placed into or taken out of the ram with the shell holder in place. This is not true with the my turret. It is exactly the same piece, identical for both presses, but it will NOT fit into the ram properly without first removing shell holder.

No springs. Just the mechanical motion of the press and gravity.

Raise ram an inch or two.

Remove shell holer.

Hold the primer cup/arm vertically and slide it down into the ram from the top. The notch in the arm should catch a little pin in the ram.

Now just let the primer arm fall. It will swing out to the side while hinging on that pin.

Replace shell holder. Should be good to go.

If that don't work then I dont know. You either have the wrong parts are something is broke or missing.

Edit: Or something could be keeping the ram from completely lowering. Have you taken apart the linkage or made some sort of modification to the normal operation? Is the press operating lever free to move it's entire range?

something was wrong with the linkage. I put it in just now and the arm would hit the bench and the press base. I removed the handle and wiggled the linkage and something popped and then I could press the primer cup up through the shell holder.

I tried one with my hand and it seated cupped like and not flat like the lee hand tool does. ill try and post pics if I can figure it out on my phone.
