So I love coyote hunting and would like to learn how to call them. Usually when we go out my buddy does the calling, but he's not always going to be able to come out with us anymore, which is why I was hoping to be able to acquire this skill myself. I was in a store and saw a decently priced "predator call" (P-60A Manufactured by "Faulk's") and picked her up right then and there.

So after first blowing into it, it sounds something like a duck, although it's supposed to be a jackrabbit distress call. After continually playing with it for about a week and looking at youtube videos out the whazoo I still can't seem to figure out how to make it successfully sound like anything short of a broken french horn. Anybody experience anything similar or could possibly give tips to this poor coyote hunter? Much thanks.

I use 2 calls, a cottontail distress call from rrcalls.com and a Knight & Hale 'Heckl'n Howler'. I also use the distress call as a deer curiosity attractor, although this only seems to interest does. Are you blowing in the right end? ;)

Yes, I'm blowing in the right end. Hahaha.

I'm just not understanding the technique. I suppose I just need more practice.

You mention watching youtube...have you tried any of the many websites that allow you to listen to & download coyote calls? Here's one that I found just by doing a search for "Coyote calls download" on Google: http://varmintal.com/coy5-20.htm

There are several very good website that will let you download their calls for listening and practicing.

Good luck.

+1 on Varmint Al's website. You can also look up Skeery Calls or even Burnham Brother's. The Burnham Brother's have a website, and are made in Texas. Gary Roberson co-owns the place, and is a stand up guy. Instructions are listed there as well.

Have you tried it in the field yet? I find that matching what everyone else is using isn't always the best. I mix things up and have used elk reeds and even whistling between my thumb and middle finger works. When you blow the call try to put as much stress and emotion as possible, remember you are imitating something in its death throws. The shrill panic is what attracts the dogs IMO.

"When you blow the call try to put as much stress and emotion as possible."

That is very true. I am not much for drama, but make it sound as sad and lonely as possible. My wife was nearly in tears when she went with me once, but laughing is a different story.

It seems your call has a reed adjustment and can be made so sound like a French horn, or a squeaky mouse.

Have you tried to adjust the reed?

Faulk's Adjustable Predator Call with fine walnut finish, precision reed and adjustable ring to produce distress call of jackrabbit, cottontail and squeaker.

When my kids were babies I would tease my then wife about taking the kid out and letting them cry and calling the dogs. Don't call HHS I never did it.

I might be a little out left field here, but I would go to every store in the area and make a list of all the different calls available. Then Go on line and find something completely different! IMHO
