Hey guys, I went coyote huntin because I was bored. I didn't put too much effort into it either. I was using a rabbit distress call. Lol, I was sitting in my truck, because, like I said, I didn't put too much effort into it.

Anyways, I tooted on my call a couple times. There was a tree line about 150 yards from me. they started yelping and hollering like crazy from the treeline. I figure they saw me in the truck, and I would have no chance at getting the ones hollering. For you experienced guys, what does this mean? There were many of them yelping and howling together, close to me. now, should I have answered with a yelping sound of my own? or continued with the distress call? How often do you blow the distress call?

I know they probably saw my truck, so next time I go out, I will have a blind setup.

I saw one run across the field at about 500 yards, but didn't take a shot as he was in full sprint.

So when you have some coyotes yelping, obviously answering your call, how do you bring em in so you can pop em?

Aw, I've had coyotes run around the truck and bark at me. "Where's my rabbit? You SOB, you promised me a rabbit!"

Just sit and wait, unless the coyotes have been "educated" by others who've shot from a truck.

Just call a bit more softly.

But, parking the truck a couple of hundred yards away and walking to a good spot makes sense. I have an old WW II parachute pad I carry to sit on. Makes sitting still a lot easier. I just back up to something to lean back against and go to calling...

Thanks, Art.

I am up in Alberta, canada, and it wasn't too warm today, hence the urge to sit in my truck.

I also thought they were yelping and hollering because they might have had a kill of their own to feast on.

Anyways, the one that ran by about 500 yds away was the one i wanted. it was big for a coyote.

I left the hunting area, as I realized the wind wasn't in my favour and drove to try to circle aound the coyotes. all the farmers in this area have given me permission, so I came onto another farmer's property. I parked, got out of the truck, and walked to the fence line. It was on the top of a hill, with a nice large valley below.

I scanned the fields, and with patches of snow and brown grass, it was tough to make out shapes. Then I saw him. The same one (I assume). and he saw me too. 300 yds out and he started running. He stopped right in a herd of cattle. I didn't shoot. I didn't want to risk hitting a cow. I walked down the valley, now on the opposite side of where i heard the coyotes yelping. I tooted on the call, and they started hollering again. I should have stayed there, but i drove bakc to my original place, and tried calling them. there was no sound. I think these ones are smart :)

Now I am spending saturday night cleaning the house so I can go out tomorrow and outsmart these guys. That is one of the most alluring parts of hunting in my mind.

What kinds of calls are available? What works best? How do you time the calls? What time is best to call and shoot? I've got coyotes behind my house. Never seen one, but hear them howling a lot. Could I sit up in a tree and call them?

There's a website with MP3s of coyote calls. They are posted for download so you can get them and then burn onto a cd to play back on a portable ghetto blaser or something to call the varmints in.

http://www.varmintal.com/ahunt.htm

page down several times and there's a list of 12 downloadable calls.

Enjoy!
