A .22 pistol or even a long stick and a little yelling will disperse coyotes in short order. I've had a number of encounters with them at night - hunting with female dogs. When the dogs tree, it tends to draw coyotes to the dogs sometimes. I know people who have had their dog attacked at the tree. But when the cavalry shows up (me) they hightail it pretty quick - without a shot fired. I won't hunt my females when they are in heat because of this, though.

I've had a couple of cases when hunting with a single dog that she opened up a long ways from me and a pack of coyotes opened almost right on top of her - when that happens I head to her quick and make some noise - and have never had a bad incident. Typically I'm not carrying any more than a .22 pistol and a walking stick, and so far have never had to fire the pistol on account of Coyotes.

When I used to deer hunt a lot, one of my goals was to kill a coyote with a bow, but let me tell you - it's not easy - they are ten times shyer of humans than a deer. And smarter.

Got a dog? Mine wont let anything within 50 Yards of me,and has a nose that can smell,85 lbs.of Catahoula Leopard Dog.Dogs legal in the area you are going?:D

Regarding the firearm question:

This varies significantly depending on where you will be camping.

Either post the camp site info/name here, or let us know who has jurisdiction for the camp site. That will allow us to give more credible advice.

Where are you camping in Maine? I doubt they would hassle you for poaching if a) you have no meat b) no reports of shots c) not misbehavin....

I was born a Maineiac, and still have a family house up there- I've never heard of the poaching aspect if you have a SD gun on you in the woods. Heck most folks had gun racks in their trucks when I was growing up....

we arent going to be in a park, there is a small area of land off of a logging road....wayyy off that a coworker has gone to since he was 19, and he is now 56. We will be roughly 17 miles from the canadian border, near jackman.
