Can 5.56 rounds stop a bear attack?

The bear would likely die of blood loss or infection but would probably outlast you by quite a bit.

Now if you use the 5.56 to shoot your companion in the leg instead you will almost certainly be able to escape the bear.

all depends if you choose to try hollow points, which will open up in the fat and barely,if at all, reach vitals.military ball in the head/neck area might provide different results.everybody is trained for body shots, not head or kneecap shots.

I think the biggest toughest bear skull that ever lived would be penetrated by green tip 62 855 ammo. Would the bear's brain noticed it was scrambled by a couple .20 holes thru it instead of a .40 hole in it ? I doubt it.

Stopping an attack is nothing at all like hunting. It doesn't matter how "pipsqueaky" the cartridge of a successful hunter is. That's not the issue; not the subject of the thread.

When you have only a very few seconds to do whatever is needed to survive the attack, you need more than some small cartridge to have any reasonable chance of escaping serious injury, if not death.

If I'm out wandering around with an AR or other such rifle in country where an attack is reasonably likely, I'd want to have a very strong pepper spray ready to hand.
You can keep the spray, I have heard of wind blow that back in someones face leaving the man blinded and the bear unphased, no hurricane force winds are going to blow my 44 Mag back at me :D I am a crack shot with a pistol but I don't know how good I am with glorified hairspray.

I'm confident in a grizzly attack that a 30 rounder FMJ blast coming from a full auto M16 may have the first two or three rounds on the target and the rest on the countryside.

......why???

Recoil? Just sayin'. .223 ain't got much recoil, though. Recoil is commensurate with the power of the round, which ain't much in this case.

Sure looks like a troll post. I had to wait and see. So far, I seem to be the only one that smells a troll.

But I bet he made enough commotion to scare the bear off. :)
No sadly he did not, he was nearly killed. Bears don't always scare so easily. I would rather hit one in the head with a 300gr slug and not leave anything to chance. At 15 yards I can hold a 3" group free standing, and 12" on rapid fire. I have alot more confidence in my shooting then any can of snake oil.

depends on the bear, and where ya' are. all bears are not created equal. florida black bears are protected, but rather small, compared to those out west and up north monster browns and grizzlies. i think around 300+ down to 200 range for females. i call our bears down here big racoons, cause that's what they are basically. trash pickers and headaches.

they typically shy away and i'd feel plenty safe carrying an ar-15. not my first choice....but i'd feel safe enough.

now against a brown bear....no way.

so i guess it's what kinda bears are ya' talking about that matters.......
