Can a .32-40 1894 be bored out to .38-55 and still function?

The bolt face doesn’t look super good, is somewhat uneven, and the firing pin hole looks a little “volcanoed” and maybe oval a little. What could have caused that? Soft steel? Lots of dry firing over the century+?

tried to get some pics

Maybe check the tip of the lever, crud in the link pin area pushing it into the firing pin, is the lever tip straight? May not be the original fitted parts? Pretty common on these old guns, firing pin and lever tip may bind for some reason? Maybe something slightly tweaked on the link/lever?
