Can a handgun be Re-registered to you? This is a wierd one.

Hmm, let's hop in our time machine and go back to 1967.

I send my cash money in an envelope to Century Arms and order a nice K98 for $19.99.

Century sends the rifle directly to my address.

OH NOES! My firearm is registered!

"Gun Registration" is what I'm talking about, not generic record keeping.

Since you want to pull the dictionary out, guns have been registered since there were guns, as shop keepers keep a tally of their trade, craftsmen keep track of who commissioned their firearms, etc.

LOL....nalioth is 100% RIGHT.

I was recently pulled over with my Arsenal SLR-95 and the policeman "ran" my AK....I told him it should come up with my name cuz I had just bought it...then he promptly replied: "Son, there are no names on guns, there is no registry, only *Stolen* or *Not Stolen*....now shut up and stay in your car."

Guess the Cop couldve been wrong....

Infringement.
No doubt. And we get exactly what we are willing to stand for, and that seems to be quite a bit. But hey, we got beer and football!

All I'm trying to to is point out that many seem to have their heads in the sand when it comes to what they seem to think isnt registration, when it blatantly is.

If you want to believe that it isnt, hey, I dont care. If anything you now have, like that AK or AR, that you bought from a dealer on a 4473, is down the road declared to be an NFA item, or banned outright, you can bet your sandy head, you will get a letter at first, (if your lucky) and then a visit. And I hate to tell you, your lame story about losing everything in a boating accident aint going to fly, and their BS meter will be way off the chart as soon as you mutter it, and they have no sense of humor. They will want to see the gun, or you will tell them who you sold it to, so they can forward trace it. Oh, and if you think the "anonymous" gun show route is going to save you, think again, they are going to want to see a bill of sale, you know, the one you kept for "tax purposes". You did claim the sale on your income tax, right? This can and will get a lot uglier than your "I dont have to tell them nuthin'!" responses. Ever deal with the ATF or IRS when they are even mildly pissed off? I know a couple of people who have, and believe me, you really dont want any part of that.

Oh, and if you were silly enough to buy things like parts kits, and things like this that are not even "guns" and dont even "need" any kind of regulation, keep this in mind. Back in the 90's they used to sell suppressor tubes and parts kits, separately mind you, and all perfectly "legal", all over the SGN and other publications. That was until the ATF seized all the shipping records of the companies selling the kits. See where this is going, or are things still a little "sandy?" :) The ATF cross referenced the shipping lists and anyone who had one from column A and one from column B got a visit.

If you live in a state that oppresses gunowners, like Maryland, don't take it out on the FFL because you've allowed you elected leaders to pass stupid laws.

The guy was probably trying to do the best he knew how to stay legal in the cesspool of gun laws. You want to ventilate, do it to your governor and elected whores.

Sounds like a big fuss over nothing much. The dealer doesn't know it is your gun. You didn't give it to him, so he can't "return" it. IMHO, it is the same deal as a gun shipped to the dealer on an internet or gun show sale, he has to go through the paperwork.

Yes, it will cost you $10 and a 7 day wait, a PITA but not worth all the heat and ranting about it. As to registering it again, so what? Who cares? If the day comes when Obama or someone decides to take all the guns, the army will come with tanks, not registration forms, and take them all, registered or not.

...

In Calif., when I sold one of my guns thru my local range/FFL, non-consignment wise, as they are my friends, it took just over 30 days to sell. I had to take possession of it prior to around the 28th day, and then bring it back the next day, as not to have too re-DOJ chk-it, by law, and have to wait the 10-days for it/me to clear on my own gun, by law,

According to my FFL, even one's own gun if, on their books, is left that long.

Important lessons.
Treat the business owner with a business like attitude and respect. They are riding the fence line and cannot deviate. I knew the laws and they didn't.
They did their part by stating that the Maryland State Police office that they call up to clarify was closed. They contacted me as soon as they could.
I didn't have to reregister, just pass the NICS check.

I will tell you that I was taken aback because it was unexpected.
Be sure that communication is in full force, questions asked and answers answered before shipping and receiving. I thought I did but I didn't follow through enough to find out about registrating and mandatory waiting period.

We have calls/walk-ins about this all the time at work. People buy a weapon and come to the State Police to have it "Registered". They look at you dumbfounded when we tell them that WV doesn't require registration and that their is no federal registration. I tell them their best option is to get a bill of sale for the gun that includes the weapons make and model number along with serial number and keep it in a separate safe location just in case the weapon is ever stolen. They just look goofed when they find out that no higher authority needs to know that they bought a weapon off of a private citizen.

U.S.SFC_RET,
Thanks for the information you provided in this thread. Next time you should have your gun sent directly to you!! LOL j/k

One thing about this thread.... Why is it every thread of this nature turns into a pissing contest? Everyone wants to sound smarter than the other and then it gets nasty when the one (or more) who are wrong start playing word games just to look right. After a few posts U.S.SFC_RET came back and told us the problem was remedied so why did this have to happen again like it always does?

IMO there really was no need for all the pissing since the only right answer was the correct answer U.S.SFC_RET, the FFL and the State Police came up with.

Maryland is Maryland. People can overreact when it comes to Maryland and once bitten twice shy. Maryland is not a gun friendly state by any means. I am in no way upset at any FFL dealers in this state because they have enough problems as it is.
You need all of your ducks in a row when working your books as an FFL dealer.
I was pissed off whenever I wanted to purchase ammunition from Wallyworld and they wanted me to fill out a sheet that the Maryland State police would come by and pick up. The MSP did a raid in montgomery county awhile back from one of these lists compiled from wallyworld. I was taken aback by the same store when the list was not to be found any longer. I asked about it and the clerk said it was against the law. ;)
The state had an attourney general in '06 who was totally and blatantly antigun. This state is blatantly antigun and will look for any holes from anywhere.
