Hello everybody,
Just wondering, a friend of mine is looking to buy a mauser and he wants to know if it can shoot "modern" 8x57 mauser loadings or if hes going to have to use old surplus ammo, or if the "new" ammo will work fine.

Thanks,

as long as it headspaces it will fire any 8mm mauser ammo.
european manufactured commercial ammo is hotter than us ammo.
some of the turk surplus is very hot.

actually MODERN American 8x57 would be the weakest and therefore best loads to run through a Mauser of dubious origin or condition.

Of course YMMV depending of the mauser model in question

Definately shoot modern US ammo if you want light loads. A lot of the 8x57 ammo was loaded hot to ensure function in the MG34 and MG42. I've got some I shoot through a 24/47 sometimes. It will split nearby rocks and make you respect the steel buttplate.

The 8mm Mauser is no underpowered sissy. But modern loadings are tamed down a bit due to so many older rifles out there with questionable headspace etc. The S&B ammo (as is most Eastern European ammo) is much hotter than American made. My handloads are trucking too.

SAAMI 8mm Mauser is loaded to accomadate the 8x57 J bore, which is .318 diameter, as opposed the the 8x57 S and JS bore, which is .323. SAAMI 8x57 loads a .323 bullet with a reduced charge

I have 'heard' of two .318 bore rifles in my lifetime. I have never laid hands on them.

Find out for sure what you friend is getting.

If the rifle is in good condition and the headspacing is correct then shoot it. The basic mauser action is more than strong enough for any 8X57 load. The key factor is the condition of the rifle in question.
