I just saw a crummy movie where the guy was using a ....nail gun... to shoot at someone.

It was performing just a little better than a 1911 and a little worse than a Hammerli free pistol.

Now ..... I ...... think it's a bunch of horse pucky.

I have sold Hilti powder activated nail guns and can't see HOW you could hit anything. Well........you'd hit......SOMETHING.....but not what you aimed at.

I think.

Anyone ever TRY it?

Does Volquartsen make an accuracy kit?

:D

I really like my accurized Passlode supernailer. It will shot a very nice 3 foot group at 5 yards!!!

My father had a nail gun with a faulty safety years ago. I remember I played with it a little before we had it fixed. With practice, you could easily fire a 6 inch group at about 8 feet. Any more than that, and the velocity drops too fast.

I've kicked mine off of rafters before and they hit the ground every time. Didn't make any difference to manufacturer. Nail guns are more of a pattern than a group. I've missed when bang nailing.

The key words are in your first sentance.

Besides even if you hit your target, isn't a nail like .17 caliber and probably moving at somewhere around 500fps? Not a real one shot stopper unless your shot placement is pretty lucky(or unlucky as the case may be).

I won't be trading my 1911 for one anytime soon.

On mine you have to have it pressed against what you are going to shoot for the gun to fire. It must be the new "safe Gun, nailgun".

When my brother and I helped our stepdad build our house (On a big piece of wooded property), he demonstrated the ballistic properties of a nailgun.

From what I remember, the nail flew a good 200 feet but the trajectory wasn't very flat. It was just kinda lobbed out there.

I'm sure you could hit a target if you practiced enough though...

:uhoh:

Seems to me that there was a story recently about a chap in...England (?) who held his supposedly empty nailgun to his head and, you guessed it, shot himself in the head. It did not kill him IIRC.

And I believe that Danny Glover used a nailgun in Lethal Weapon II to take out a South African killer, but that was about three contact shots to the head (?), no distance involved.

And we all know how factual and accurate the Lethal Weapon series of movies is/was. :fire:

I read an article not too long ago about a man who was accidentally shot in the head with a nail gun at point blank range. He walked to the edge of the worksite with a nail piercing his brain to wait for EMS.

On a "rescue 911" type show that reenacted of real-life events, a fellow was shot in the heart, also at point blank range (I'd imagine most accidents with nail guns are at or near contact range), with a pneumatic nail gun. He drove to the hospital to be treated.

Gee, these movies such as Lethal Weapon will have you think a nail gun is a non-regulated assault weapon with assailants falling left and right to the deadly device, whereas it seems in real life a fellow can take a shot to the brain or heart and still keep on ticking.
I'm sure a person can easily die from an unfortunate accident with a nail gun, but I wouldn't think you'd want it for protection unless we're talking something with a 1,200 RPM cyclic rate. :D

BTW, I don't imagine those nails remain point-first in orientation during flight for too long... I could be wrong, but I'd imagine at a range beyond 15 feet, the nails would be striking sideways, backwards and whatnot.

Um...yeah....

But I am not real anxious to admit to anything.

And you want to wire the safety switch back

Thats all i'm saying:eek:

I know for an absolute fact that the Paslode nail gun of 30 years ago, operated at 120 PSI and using ring-shank, clip head 16 penny nails, would not penetrate skin at 10 feet.

I also know, based on observation only, that if you nail your hand to a sheet of plywood, you're in a world of hurt!

In Lethal Weapon 2 Glover nailed one baddie in the forehead with a single nail from an airless gun. He then shot another repeatedly in the chest through plastic sheeting. All were contact shootings and probably more believable than most of what you see in the Lethal Weapon series. :) I'd say in that case a nail gun with 16's in it would probably be pretty doggone effective. As far as scoring any damaging hits from any distance, none of the guns I've ever used could do it.

I remember on Home Improvement once that Tim set up a series of seven of them to give a 21 gun salute. Apparently the trigger mechanism had a worn sear & it ran away on him & shot up the studio.

:D

The guy I rent my basement to got one of those. First thing he did was figure out how to defeat the
safety.
I think his gun will launch the nails about 15 or 20 feet. Probably with enough accuracy to hit a person at 5-10. While I don't think I'll be trading my sig for his nailgun, I'm not going to volunteer to stand in front of it, either. If nothing else, the tetanus shots afterwards would really suck.

this just in from the Peoples republik of Ozland. Gang Bangers are souping up nailguns and driving around with a compressor in the trunk shooting up neighborhoods, and wounding poor suzy jenkins.

I was using a Hilti gun a few years back to shoot a stud into the side of a steel cabinet. Wasn't paying too close attention and grabbed the wrong charge. The stud punched straight through the side I was shooting, passed about 2 feet through the cabinet and imbedded itself in the opposite side.

A 16 penny nail may only be about .17calibre, moving at (being very generous) 400-500fps, but it weighs almost EIGHT HUNDRED grains (actually ~765grains plus or minus.)

My Porter Cable full framing nailer kicks like a .223, and will send 3.5" nails a hundred feet or more, with enough energy to pierce 3/4" plywood at 5feet.

It may not kill instantly, but I ain't standing infront of it. I could make consistant COM hits at about 10-15feet tops.

It does have about a 100 round 'clip' and the semi-auto action can produce pretty devistating supressive fire :)

I've got both a Hitachi and a Paslode and they will both shoot 16d nails around 100' they flip and tumble kinda like lots of people think a .223 does.

I wouldn't be afraid for my life of one over 2 or 3 feet away but they will certainly leave a welt or even a nasty gash.

I've been on the floor as a cut man when the roof was being sheeted. A novice missing the rafter repeatedly can lay down withering fire on a guy wearing only a bandana on his head.

I think I took 5 or 6 hits and ended up with 4 welts and 2 holes in me.

Those were 12d 2 3/4" ringshanks though. Of course the return fire was more like AAA in the form of a 22oz ::what: Estwing claw hammer and a few choice words :cuss:

a 16d would have definately hurt more.

by the way, the rate of fire for a paslode with the safety pinned back is frightening.
