Title really says it all. I'm looking for a bobtail 1911 but I don't need (or want, really) a 2,500 dollar custom piece. The only real "criteria" I have is it needs to be chambered for 10MM or .45 ACP

ETA: I'm lokking to get as far under a grand as is possible without getting a "problem" for my purchase.

So, gun gurus, what say you. Is there a "budget" bobtail on the market or am I going to have to sell a kidney?

Also, I have seen a few companies that will bobtail an existing butt on your gun. Anyone have any experience with a service like that or a company that performs such a service?

Thank you in advance for your time, consideration and advice.

Dan Wesson CBOB at around $1,000 is probably the least expensive "bobtail" on the market. Pretty good pistol, from what I understand.

I believe you would be shocked at the superb quality of the Dan Wesson Commander Classic Bobtail.

Severns Custom has one (or actually four) of them for sale at $1060.00

I liked my DW CBob so much that my Colt no longer felt "right" in my hands. The Bobtailed mainspring housing just feels that good. And it conceals amazingly well too. I bought the housing from Ed Brown along with the installation jig. I paid some money to have it installed as I just wasn't comfortable enough doing it myself.

GunBlast has a great "how to" article on doing it yourself:

I'd go with the Dan Wesson in a heartbeat.... Good luck!

You buy a Dan Wesson or a cheaper 1911 order the parts from brownells and have a gunsmith do for you Remember you can't do a compact has to be a Commander or Full size . I have a DW and love it Buds had them in stock Sunday for 999

For me it also removes that corner of the frame that sticks into my palm when shooting Its much more comfortable to shoot beside less printing when carried

Forgive the newbe question but what is the purpose of the bobtail?

I have to agree the most with this:

So, I could, in theory, buy a stainless Taurus (I do like those pistols) and have it bobtailed by a gunsmith for around the same price as the Dan Wesson?

Seems like the "built by Dan" gun is the way to go. I was just hoping someone made a bobtail in the Taurus/Rock Island price range.

You will not be dissapointed with a DW CBOB. I have two of them. I'm convinced they are the best bang for the buck out there for a quality 1911. It's like a custom 1911 for the price of a Kimber.

Local smith will do a bobtail job ( and a damn nice one) for $175.

My dan wesson PM-7 10mm is there right now.

You can go "cheap" or you can get more than what you pay for. Dan Wesson CBoB falls into that latter category.

I have compared the DW CBoB (~1000) to the Ed Brown Kobra Carry (~$2500) and you get the same level of quality, fitting and parts (minus the snakeskin treatment). To me, that is one heck-of-a bargain.

HK45pcUSPC , you will still save about 300 going with a Taurus + bobtail.....that buys lotz of ammo -
or go RIA and save 400....

you may save with the Taurus+bobtail from the get go, but in the long run it'll probably cost more after replacing/upgrading parts.

the Cbob is good to go. It uses Ed Brown parts.
