I have an 8 shot Mossberg 500, and I was wondering if there are any barrel requirements to adding a choke (like thicknes). I'm new to this process and was wondering if I can just ream/tap any old barrel for a choke. Any advice?

Thanks

I believe their is a thickness requirement, and it depends on the type of tubes you are going to ream and thread for. I know of a Mossberg that was whacked off a couple of inches and was set up for rem choke tubes. Some barrels could be to thin for certain threads.

easiest and cheapest is to find a used barrel with choke tubes,

Mossberg for years made (and still may) a 20 inch turkey barrel, now with the 8 shot tube, I do not think choked barrels are available, if you are thinking about using it for hunting.

choke tubes are a constriction, not an enlargeing of the end of the barrel, designed to force the shot column into the densest packing just as the payload leaves the barrel.

I think getting a regular length mag tube and choke tube barrel would be the easiest,

hmm... i just got a mossberg 500 7+1 as a gift myself. new to shotguns also.

Mine says "cylinder bore". ran into 2 seemingly knowledgable guys at the range who said i'd need a different barrel to utilize any chokes, etc. Said that my set up was more for just HD/SD.

i'll be interested to see if anybody has other thoughts/ opinions.

Mossberg has, on and off, made the 8 shot mag tubed 500A as a combo gun with both the 18.5 IC (Improved Cylinder) barrel and an additional barrel (varying lengths) with accu-choke tubes. You may be able to find one of these other barrels used, or contact Mossberg as they may available as new non cataloged items.

It was similar to this, http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/manufacturers_id/83/products_id/46907, but they done up with an 8 shot tubed gun on and off in the past.

I picked up an 8+1 Mossy 500 this weekend.

Thinking I might want to try my hand at Trap again, I called Mossberg yesterday and asked if a suitable choked barrel was available.

They said yes.

Part number 12293. $116 plus shipping.

It comes with a Modified choke, but others can be purchased.

What about the 590?

Do I have the same option with a 590? or is there only one type of set up with it?

zek

Havlin

You can buy a 18.5'' barrel with accuchoke for $69.99 from a company called Havlin Sales. It would cost you more to have threads added to a cylinder barrel.

I havent seen a 590 bbl set up for screw in chokes, but I havent really looked for a while either. I just assumed that I'd have to have a smith ream and thread it.

[edit]
http://www.havlinsales.com/ They've got a 20" 590 bbl listed with accuchokes.

I was just trying to avoid having to get a 5 shot mag and new barrel (wanted to shoot chukar with it, even in the 8 shot config it's still lighter than a 28" 1100).

Thanks, that's just what I needed...

Possible answer: Poly-choke2. It's threaded on the inside. I doubt there's enough barrel in front of the lug for a regular Poly-choke. I.D. must be under .735.
