So its a spikes tactical m4 with adjustable stock, what is needed to convert this to a 20" A4? Just a barrel, handguards, and A2 stock?
Please be specific.

You don't need a whole upper if you are able to check headspace and have a couple of tools (Barrel vise and wrench).

Swapping a barrel on an AR is trivial. There are lots of builder guides online.

Just buy a 20" upper that appeals to you.

There is nothing wrong with having multiple uppers for a single lower, that's one of the beautiful things about the AR platform.

You'll probably want to change out your buffer too; the M4 gas system is rougher than the rifle length version, so the heavier buffer might lead to less-than-desirable performance with a 20" upper.

For the lower-
Complete stock (w/buttplate, screw, etc,), riffle length buffer tube, spring & spacer.

For the upper-
Complete barrel assembly (gas tube, sight tower, etc.), rifle length forearm & a new bolt since your old one is probably worn to your old barrel and shouldn't be used on a new barrel.

very easy to do (even i did it!) and there are step by step directions over at AR15.com
It's late, but I'm pretty sure thats it...

FYI-AR's headspace on the bbl extension so you will not need to check the headspace but you will want to replace your old bolt face for reasons mentioned above.

If you are planning to start tinkering with ARs, get some tools. What you are proposing would take me about 45 minutes. As far as the headspace goes, I do a quick check using "go" and "field" gauges, but I've never seen a barrel, from a reputable dealer, that had head space issues. Whether you're going to NEED a new bolt depends on how worn your bolt is.

I'm running an 18" barrel with a rifle length gas system and a heavy carbine buffer and haven't had any problems. If anything, I will shoot very smoothly, if you stick with the carbine length recoil system. Since you're going with a 20" barrel with a longer dwell time, there's less chance of your having problems.

Whatever you do, be sure that you get a good fixture to clamp your upper into a vice when you work on the barrel. Don't try to improvise on this. ARs are tough, but they are still made of aluminum and it's easier to tweak them than you may think.
