The only problem that I've seen with Smith & Wesson in my reading here is in their management, not the revolvers themselves.

The fiancee's planning on picking up a used .357 or .38 4" Smith this weekend. It'll be one that's already drilled for a scope mount. Are there any specific models we should avoid?

Just be sure to do the Jim March revolver checkout (the sticky at the top of this thread).

You can go wrong with any model of any brand, new, used, or otherwise.

Check the gun thoroughly before you buy it, and you'll probably be all right. One of the advantages of buying a Smith & Wesson is that you can always get parts and gunsmithing services for it.

The question of what Smiths to avoid leads me to believe that you doubt their durability.

I say get a Ruger and the peace of mind that you deserve.

Leave the SoCal Smiths to me :)

As far as i know there arent any specific models of Smith and Wesson revolvers that should be outright avoided. They produce the occasional lemon just like everyone else, but the basic functionality of their products is sound accross the board.

I have a number of Smith's and Ruger wheelguns. I like them all. You can't go wrong in any k-frame Smith's. They are durable, accurate and great looking. Smith's are also in high demand and hold there value really well. There are a lot of people on this forum that hold them for appreciation. Even though they mite not admit it. Get a Smith. Or get a ruger. Beware that these things are VERY much addicting to both man and women alike. Don't take this litely it can happen to you too!
good shootin
kid

As others have said, its possible too get an occassional lemon; but very
doubtful from Smith & Wesson. Year's ago, I bought a brand NIB S&W
model 19 that just simply would not run; as the timing was terrible. To
avoid all kind's hassle's I eventually traded the gun to a dealer who had
it repaired. But, I'm like everyone else if I pay good hard earned money
for any product I expect it too run as it should. :uhoh: :D
