That old National Rifle Association TV ad in which Magnum P.I. actor Tom Selleck says, "I am the NRA" might be making a comeback. That's because he's being talked about as the replacement for former five-term NRA President Charlton Heston, the Moses portrayer who is afflicted with Alzheimer's disease.

Entire U. S. News & World Report article here.

I would like to see the Neug as NRA pres.

I personally think we need to get a little more in you face to the gun grabbers.

I think Tom Selleck would be great for the NRA. Ted Nugent is a hypocrite and I dont think he would bring a good face to the NRA. His politics on gun control I agree with but the majority of people think he is to extreme. They wont take the NRA seriously since the Nuge will open his mouth and make us all look bad.

Driving the ferarri or parting the red sea...... its close but I'm gonna give the edge to the 'stache in the 308.

It's important to have a "public" face for the presidency. It helps to make our fight more "legitimate" in the eyes of the fence-sitters.

I'd vote for Selleck in a heartbeat.

Ted is lots of fun, but way too extreme to head up the NRA. He runs his mouth faster than a full auto. I remember when he came here he managed to alienate most of the state's population with insults and crude remarks. He's a loud, obnoxious rock star. And he's great in that role. But advocating serious positions in DC or before the national media? He'd be torn apart and made to look like a ranting fool.

TS, on the other hand, has watched what he said in public for decades to keep his career going. Plus, he's an intelligent and sane man not a wild-eyed rocker. So he doesn't have Ted's long track record of bone headed and often bizarre comments and rants. But he's also on our side, which is a real rarity in Sillywood. Plus, he hunts with an '86 and you can't get any classier than that.

I think Cosmoline summed it up pretty well. I would definitely support him. I think he would help the NRA's image a lot with people who don't follow firearms issues closely. Soccer mom types are comfortable with him.

Nugent reflects badly upon the RKBA movement for reasons too numerous and obvious to list. He is basically a troglodyte who would save our enemies the trouble of having to make up bad things about us.

Selleck is generally perceived to be classy individual who watches his mouth and puts a friendly face on the movement. He seems to hold up well under pressure (nice try rosie) and he is a pretty good advocate for self defense and gun ownership. He seems like an ideal candidate to be passed the torch.

Well I guess Tom

Is a little more presentable then Ted.
I think though , that this is based on old assumptions.
I saw Ted debate Bill Maher on that "politically incorrect"
show, the Topic was disabled shooters and make a wish foundation
turning down kids with chronic diseases the chance to go
hunting.
Bill was anti hunting but Ted turned it around better then anyone
I've seen in a debate, making Bill seem like a cold hearted hater of
of disabled kids rather then a warm hearted lover of bambi.

My original question remains - why is Nugent a hypocrite, with a new one added; why is he a "troglodyte"?

Can Tom Selleck do it? Yes. Absolutely. And do well at it given his appeal to both gun owners and many non-gun owners. The real question is:

Will he do it? by taking the position, Tom Selleck would be effectively ending his acting career, unless he becomes a fixture in John Millius films. The Hollywood honchos will balk at the idea of putting the head of the NRA in any significant film role. Too political.

That's right. He's an embarassment. Tom Selek would be good, because he seems level-headed and likable.

I think the NRA needs to bring more than just one person out as the spokesman. Tom Selleck would be great choice to replace Heston. But add celebrities like Karl Malone and Eva Longoria to get some of the younger crowd interested. Maybe the NRA can try something like the "Got Milk" campaign - every ad would have some new celebrity endorsing them.

Good God folks, we have many people on this very site advocating Gingrich for POTUS when he was gettin' some on the side.
Now, you take Tom - with his 80's porn star 'stache - who has almost certainly had out of wedlock sex and make him the NRA spokesman because Ted doesn't fit the mold and call Ted an embarrassment? To who? Everyday, gun loving Americans?
How many here would villify Rush "Oxy" Limbaugh for his drug addiction and transporting - illegally - Viagra to a foreign country when he's not married? I know...he just wanted a place to hang his bathrobe while walking around his hotel room.
Speak for yourselves and look in the mirror before you judge others. Ted connects with a lot of everyday, gun totin', pissed-off at crime Americans.
Think about what you're saying.
Talk about hypocrisy...

...who are already members of the NRA. Plus, you have to admit Ted is a loon. Do we need to start listing all the weird and outrageous things the man has said and done? I really do not want to go down that road because I don't want to attack him. But he's the wrong person for the job.

Well Cosmo, if Ted's a loon, so am I - with no apologies. I would venture to guess that he's drawn many to the NRA as I have. This makes no sense. Gingrich can have an affair while married and draw many conservatives to his cause and Limbaugh, depite being an addict who illegaly aquires his drugs, can still maintain support among "conservatives", but Nugent is demonized as a result of his open honesty and unconventional appearance.
People, if you have a honest bone in your body and oppose Nugent because of his appearance and open manner of speaking, refrain from putting down the Libs for their PCness.
Anything less puts you in *their* camp.
That's all...
