Wondering if non-Arizona residents, such as myself, can open carry in Arizona. I'll be there in the near future (I live in California) and was thinking about open carrying. I've never done it before, since I've lived in California my entire life.

From this site, I'd say that you can. With that said, while open carry is legal here, in my opinion it is pretty rare. I live in the Phoenix area, and outside my visits to my favorite gun shops and the range, I don't think most folks bother with it. However, if you want to try it out, feel free.

Open carry, although not common in metro Phoenix, is still acceptable. I carry pretty much everywhere with no problems. Be well dressed and groomed, pretend it's a cel phone, and call everyone ma'am and sir :).

Your carry must be obvious.

Off limits: School grounds, and anyplace posted (some state and city government offices are posted illegally, but you probably aren't coming here to be a test case). If a property owner (or agent thereof) asks you to disarm, you must do so or leave. I've never had anyone ask, though.

The advice I give is even worse than what you'd get from a lawyer ;), so please read The Arizona Gun Owner's Guide before you visit. It's the easiest, cheapest way I know of to keep yourself out of trouble while packing in Arizona.

I hope you have a great visit! And thanks for considering packing. More Arizonans should exercise this right.

Go for it, but why not get an AZ CCW permit while you're here? Our permits are available to non-residents, as well, 16 hour course, $65 for 4 years, and THAT may change to lifetime issuance....

I open carry everywhere including WalMart, Safeway, all of the banks, hmmm...

At the risk of repeating myself, I open carry everywhere and always have. Only had one woman ask me if I had a permit for it and I said "Welcome to Arizona"

It's a bill going through the state Congress - already passed the House, I believe...also a bill to put gun safety education, (the real thing, not HCI or Million Mommie propaganda) into all schools willing to do it, possibly including range time.

sumpnz,

After I wrote my state rep's about SB1363 regarding allowing concealed carry in places that serve alcohol, I got the following from my state Representative...

AZLib's Address
Somewhere in Mesa, AZ 85XXX

Dear AZLibertarian,

I support the bill although I did not see the article in the Arizona Republic. I hope the article showed my support. I also hope you will support my bill allowing for Lifetime CCW Permits.

I don’t think that we should have to ask the Governor every four years for the right to discreetly protect ourselves. Emails to Senator John Huppenthal, Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, in support of HB2325 – concealed weapons permit; lifetime issuance, would surely help the cause.

Thanks for your support of the 2nd Amendment. It is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Representative Chuck Gray
Arizona House of Representatives
Mesa - Legislative District 19
So...There you have it. They're trying to make CCW a lifetime thing. I wonder what they think of this at Caswells and the other places that do CCW training/renewals.

If they go to lifetime issuance I will definatly get off my duff and get the permit. Do you have phone numbers for the appropriate reps?

When I have taken classes at Gunsite, I put on a pistol when I got dressed in the morning and took it off when I went to bed. Went to grocery store, convienience stores, gas stations, gun shops, restruants etc. and nobody gave me a second glance.
I saw plenty of other people doing the same.
I don't know if I would do it in metro Phoenix though.

My permit expires in December.

Bad thing is, I might be on the other side of the world in Sept. Hopefully they will let me renew early.

Yeah, they call this "self registration." You will then be on the list of the ones who have the NERVE to carry a gun. :banghead:

ok i have a question about this-
so how does the open carry law apply to you in your vehicle??
is it still considered open if it is on your hip, or are there some other regulations?
seems like in a car, maybe you are concealing it ? anyone?

pretty cool, you dont really need a CCW in AZ, huh, you just open carry . ? excellent.

Pretty much as long as it's holstered or cased it can be anywhere in your vehicle. Your car is treated like an extension of your home so can have it out of sight but still accessable while in your car provided it's holstered or cased.

I'm probably reading too much into your words above, but just to be clear, there is a difference between carrying concealed and carrying openly. In Arizona, if you want to carry concealed, you'll need a CCW permit--either an AZ permit or one of the states we have repricosity (sp?) with. Open carry does not require a permit.

no, i got you, open carry and concealed carry are two different things, but what i am getting at is, if you want to carry a gun, you dont necessarily need a permit, as long as it is carried openly.

which to me, well open is in a lot of ways better than concealed anyway.
so you can carry a gun around without a permit.

Also , thanks gfor the car info, interesting. so in your car it can practically be concealed, but must be holsterd or cased.

NOW= from what you say, this brings another question-
obviuously, the open-carried weapon must be holstered.
i assume loaded is ok as well, what good is it empty.
BUT= so in your home, are you required to keep it holstered/cased??
doenst seem likely, but the post sort of leans that way

Carrying in the open in the East Valley area where I live (Phoneix, Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, etc) these days will attract attention. When I first moved to Arizona I carried openly because the CCW law wasn't in effect yet and I moved from a state (Washington) where I'd had a CCW for years and just couldn't stand going about unarmed. Back then I'd see another openly armed person almost daily, but since the CCW law went into affect and most of us that go armed, including me, got a CCW it's rare for me to see an openly armed civvie anymore, I can't remember one instance in the last couple of years. Well, that is if you don't count gun store employees and that sort of thing. Regular sheeple around here just aren't used to it anymore. Get out to the smaller towns and you start seeing openly armed folks again.

I guess I should've stated that I'll be driving from San Diego, CA to the Grand Canyon. I want to carry in my truck, and on my person, open, once I hit Arizona.
