Down in the good ol South.
I wanted to buy a crappy 5 dollar scope from China on eBay. Apparently they have it listed as for airguns but I want to try it on my .22.

When I clicked buy it now I got this message here.

"It appears this item is restricted for export by the U.S. Department of State (DOS) under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (22 CFR, Parts 120-130) or the Department of Commerce under the Bureau of Industry (BIS) and Security Export Administration Regulations, EAR (15 CFR, Parts 730-774). ITAR restricted items require an export license granted from the DOS Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC) prior to export. EAR restricted items may or may not require a license, depending on the end user and the ultimate country of destination.
Directing the seller to export without complying with the regulatory licensing and documentation requirements is a violation of United States law. Please consult DDTC’S website at ww.pmddtc.state.gov and BIS’S website at www.bis.doc.gov for more guidance. Also, please refer to eBay’s Military Items Policy for additional information."

It allows me to continue with the purchase as normal.
From what I read on that it seems it's unlawful to export. But I'm trying to import this scope.

Do I need to worry about breaking the law if I buy this?

Lots of gun parts and accessories are restricted from export to other countries by ITAR (international traffic in arms regulation), but as you are having it shipped to you, and you are not exporting it, this does not have any effect on your purchase. It's a CYA legal disclaimer eBay dumps on anything that could be gun related.

Yup, doesn't affect you at all as a buyer & end user. Only matters to sellers; most firearm parts and accessories (including optics - especially NV and thermal) must be restricted to US sales only.

Okay thanks everyone. :)

I kind of figured that was the case but wanted to get a second opinion. With all the gun laws out there I might be a bit paranoid when it comes to making sure I'm not breaking some law I didn't know about.

EBay reviews all listings for potential legal issues. My experience (won't go into it here as it would drive the thread off topic) is that some reviewers would realize that any US customers would be importing the scope and wouldn't make an issue of it. Others will just see "gun part" and slam every and any restriction they can on it.

Looks like a legal-bot catch.

I listed an automotive part once which was interpreted a firearm and another item (I believe it was fishing tackle) that botted back as racist.

That's what happens when you employ humans in an effort to not deal directly with other humans rather than human to human relations.

Kinda like:

"Please say a command"

"Did you say:"pay your axes on fine?""

"Did you say:"lay soft waxes in time?""

"Press 0 to speak with an operator... there will be an approximate wait time of twenty.... seven.... days - thank you for your call"

*Click*

Todd.
