Can the ammo situation get much worse?

It's getting better in Va my LGS has every cal in stock but limited boxes out and very small amounts of 22lr no more value pacs.

Hmmm...how could it get worse....

Oh I dunno, if there were actually a drop in manufacturing, and not just an artificial, panic-induced buying frenzy.

In my area, it actually has gotten much worse in the last few weeks.

Last month, I walked into my favorite local Bi-Mart (kind of like a miniature independently owned Wal-Mart), and they had shelves full of .17HMR, 12-gauge birdshot, some .45 Colt, and most rifle calibers. Not too bad.

2 weeks ago, I walked into the same store and saw a line of 12 people at the gun counter, waiting for the Monday morning ammo shipment to arrive. They still had quite a bit of shotgun ammo on the shelf.

Today I walked into the same store. Here is what I saw: 20-gauge birdshot, 1 box of .222 Remington, 1 box of .17HMR. That was it.

So although this has been going on for a couple of months now, I have noticed a major shift in just the last 3 weeks. It's sad and frustrating. I haven't been shooting in months now, mostly because of this crisis.

How does it get much worse than constantly empty shelves?

LOL. I can still find ammo at regular prices. Decent amounts of it all considered. Might have to road trip 80 miles but no big issue.

Care to tell us where you are finding this ammo and what calibers?

I've been seeing more on the shelves also. Wal mart gets ammo in, you just have to be there when it does. Just because you walk by and dont see it doesnt mean they never get it in. Ask. I've seen ammo on pallets waiting to be stocked several times, once was the 22's I bought, they also has 45's, 40's, 380's, and 17's. All were normal prices. I've bought 22's recenty for the old price. One sporting goods person said they got "cases and cases and cases" of 22's in on a saturday a week or so ago, but it was all gone by noon. It isn't that theres no ammo, its just being bought by everyone in freakout mode. All their ammo is the same price it always was. The local shop has a fair amount of ammo, some higher, most the same old price or close to it. They have trouble getting 22's. Their powder selection is getting thin, but they still have some (wal mart has been getting powder and primers in also, it just sells fast).

The chicken littles are getting tiring. Yes, its hard to find, but not nonexistant by any means, and seems to be getting better in may places. It isn't in fact the end of the world, tho it seems some would like to say it is.

Ahh the new Amerika begging for scraps and waiting in lines

just wanted to give a boycott to Cheaper Than Dirt.

as of today, they emailed me stating that they had 9mm ammo.

when i eagerly went to their site, i saw that they were selling Tula (steel russian ammo) for $59.69 for a box of 50.

i will not pay these kinds of prices for "basement" ammo.

i ask all other "sensible" gun owners to boycott these animals too.

thanks,

CTD emailed me today that they have 5.56 PMC x-tac for $29 /20rds....

Really?? For that price it'd better be gold-plated...

CTD can go to you know where!

Went to Walmart this morning to stand in line at the 7am ammo release. Got 3 50 round boxes of 9mm. I got lucky since I was about 10th in line. By the time I got home on Armslist there was and ad for 45acp and 22lr. The guy in front of the lines jacket was hanging on a chair in the background. Of course he believes in supply and demand. He is demanding a lot! He was selling a story about needing it for the grandkids to shoot. I think I might print the ad with pictures out and hand it out in line tomorrow. Maybe he will be ashamed enough to leave!

I have always refused to buy ammo from Gander. Their prices are always consistently higher than the local Bass Pro and any lgs I have shopped. CTD always has a disclaimer in their ads that "prices subject to change". Only thing worse than a hoarder is a gouger. I'll start pricing slingshots first.

"By the time I got home on Armslist there was and ad for 45acp and 22lr."

I'm pretty disgusted by that....one of the reasons my dealer of choice logs your name and I.D. these times and limits you to a few boxes. They also recognize you and will say something if you show up everyday.

Buying ammo in bulk and leaving nothing for the guy behind you simply to flip it for a profit online is pretty low...

I wonder how they would feel if Wal-Mart instead would charge Arms-List prices? :banghead:

local shop just got in some 17hmr from hornady, wincester, and remigton ammo. not sure what the win was and think the rem was shotgun ammo.

@JLR2267

"I'm not sure I would shop there if he needed my name to sell me ammo"

awww... even Wal-Mart wants to see your ID when you buy ammo.

Oooh. even worse... the dealer also wants to see my name when I go to their range and my name is in their member-list. He's probably giving that list to the government and they coming to my house because I shoot at their range and bought a box of .223.

seriously - I'm against a federal registry with gun model, serial number and who owns it. But who in the world cares if my dealer knows what ammo I buy. he is not the government.

and if someone would be going after EVERYONE who bought ammo.... that's going to be a long list....

A buddy of mine was at a GS this past weekend, he said what ammo was there was atrociously priced! One guy at a table had a brick of .22 LR ammo for sale, another gent walked up, asked how much for the brick of .22's? The guy at the table told him, "$200.00", the gent pulled out his wad of cash and gave him the $200.00! Another guy had 7.62X39 ammo for sale, $35 a box the guy told a customer, "How many boxes you got?", "15 boxes" he was told. "I'll take 'em all." He handed over the $525 cash and walked off. No way would I ever pay $200 for a brick of .22's !

How about actual Gunbroker ammo "sold" prices for any popular rifle ammo, i.e. .22 LR, .223, 7.62x39 etc?

I gave up a few years ago trying to find this hidden, mysterious part of their website to track rifles' actual sale prices . Unless it has become much easier, maybe the website wants it to be difficult.

.22 LR prices in a single gun shop in Pensacola FL )Navy Blvd) must be a bizarre exception.
$200 for a box of 550. Maybe such shops plan to negotiate down a serious fraction.

Sure it can get worse. Ammo purchasing just got much worse in Connecticut, right?
Not to be all tin-foily or anything, but who knows what other states will follow their sad example?
"Beginning Oct. 1, all purchases of ammunition and long guns would require an eligibility certificate.
To obtain certification to buy ammunition, purchasers would have to pass a federal criminal background check."
