So there I was, checking out at the new Gander Mountain in Orlando. I'd gone over there specifically to stock up on ammo. I found most stuff I needed.

As I was at the checkout counter, one of the other clerks, a young (maybe 20?) guy looked at the pile of rounds and said, "Wow - are you going to start a war?"

I kinda just stood there. Thought of two answers ("Well, it would be a pretty short war" and "Son, I've been to a war, this isn't enough ammo to roll out the gate.") I discarded both of those, and went with, "My Mom always told me to stock up on nonperishables when they were on sale."

But, come ON. I was NOT buying a ton of ammo.
I had:
500 round box of .22 lr
(3) random 50 rd boxes other .22 lr for trial-and-error purposes
(4) 5 rd boxes of sabot slugs
(3) 20 rd boxes of 30/30 ($9/box!)
(2) 100 rd value packs of 9mm

Now, if they'd had .30 carbine or if the other .45ACP ammo suckers hadn't beat me to it, THEN I might have really stocked up.

So - anybody else run into this type of thing (at an outdoor store, even???). Anybody have a good, snarky comeback that make me say "wish I'd thought of that?"

whenever there's a new person at the local walmart i mess with them.

i just answer machine gun when they ask, "is this for a handgun or rifle?":D

i usually get a blank stare or a look of:what:

if one of the regular people isn't there, they'll call the manager who shows up and tells me to quit confusing their new hires. :D

You might say something like "Nah, this would only be enough to last for a small skirmish". :)

Always wanted to...

But I won't because I don't want to start any more feelings of 'gun owners are nuts';

"War? War? There's a war? Is it close? When does it start? Can I play? Huh, can I? CAN I?"

I have to admit long ago in my mis-spent youth I pulled one on an airline agent. I was a federal officer and travelling armed. (In those days it was no big deal. Now with terrorists trying to highjack planes, no one wants an officer armed anymore - go figure.) The airline agent was being much more obtuse than I appreciated and she was having difficulty understanding the credential I presented meant I was a federal officer.. sigh... Part of my checked baggage was an obvious gun case. She finally got around to asking what was in the case.

I told her, "It's a riot gun."

She asked, "Why do you have a riot gun?"

Me: "You just never know when you'll be invited to a riot."

I assured her it wasn't loaded and she gave me my boarding pass.

Guy behind the counter at one of my favorite gun shops asked me this a couple weeks ago when I picked up 800 rounds of .223 and 1000 rounds of el cheapo 9mm hardball. I looked back at him totally deadpan and said "Nope. Just getting ready for one."

Since they know me there, and know that I habitually spend a lot more on ammo and range fees than on guns and accessories, they just had a good laugh and replied something along the lines of "That might not be such a bad idea ..."

I probably wouldn't have said it if there'd been any bystanders, though. Public relations, and all that bleep ...

I was buying .45 ammo at Wally World. The kid asked my "Are you going to shoot this?"

I replied "No, I just drop cement blocks on them to hear the boom!"

Later I told my wife "I have to go back and tell him the truth, someone might get hurt if I don't"

LOL, I love those brainless wally-world agents!

I've had wally-world agent refuse to sell me .22LR "because the computer says it's a pistol round" (aint 21 yet)

Took him a few minutes when I had him read the box ".22 long rifle" and call up his overseer.

if it werent for convenience, I wouldnt be shopping there

ammo checkout

I like to get my bulk ammo on-line, not just because it is cheaper, but because no on asks those stupid questions. I ordered 3,000 rounds of .223/7.62x39 from the sporstmandguide and not one question was asked, no emails were sent or anything. I bought a case of .30-06 once from academy and no here asked anything about it.

???

The guy is a checkout clerk IN A FRIGGIN SPORTING GOODS STORE!!!

Just what does that idiot think the store is supposed to do with the ammo, use it to hold down the display counter???

:cuss:

HazWaste-

I think that's what blew my mind. I mean - it's an outdoor store. You advertise good prices on ammo. Are people not expected to then come to your store and BUY said ammo???

And, like I pointed out, it was NOT a lot of ammo. Poor kid. Obviously has never taken a big bag of ammo and stack of firearms to the range. :D

Last time I was in Gander I bought:

100 12ga Sabot slugs
500 9mm FMJ
250 357 mag
60 220 Swift V-Max
200 223 FMJ
250 12ga 2 3/4" #6

And the gal who range me out asked, find everything allright?:D

I guess it happens quite often in their store.

Buying ammo in Wal-Mart:

Nearby teenaged customer of the "gangsta" persuasion, looking at BB guns, sees two boxes of Rem UMC .45 ACP stacked on the counter.

"Whatcha need all that ammo for?"
"Oh, just stocking up."
*guy gets a weird look on his face*
"I don't think I wanna live wherever you're livin', if you be needin' that much ammo!"

When we purchased my wife her 9mm for her birthday she sheepishly looked at the guy behind the counter, pointed at me and asked if her new gun could take a guy my size out. :scrutiny:

When he nervously answered yes. She re-iterated by asking if it would blow a guy my size away or just injure him!:scrutiny:  :what:

As we were walking out with our new purchase all the guy could think to say to me was "good luck".:what:

I had one of their green shopping carts loaded full with 9mm (not a bright thing to do as the cart looked like it might have given way at any time;) ), clerk just remarked "wow, that's a lot of ammo". Yet, when I buy 500 rounds in IL, even the customers are like "gonna start a war?"

I'm the president of a university pistol club, being such I'm also the purchasing agent. I recently went to dunhams to buy ammo for the club. I strolled my sagging cart over to the check out with 15,000rds of .22 rimfire. The clerk gasps and asked me why in tarnation I need that much ammo. I present my credentials which seems to settle her down. As I'm gettin ready to leave she sas, Well I guess we won't be seeing you again for a couple years. I told her, naw, you might want to make another bulk order, this might last us through the semester.:what:

Last time I answered that question with "machine gun" the clerk looked at me dead pan and said "Then son, you're gonna need a LOT more than what you got here."

But its been a LONG time since I've been asked the "is this for a handgun" question since I'm clearly over 21.

I guess we can be glad certain types of people don't understand the concept of practice.

To most people 1,000 rounds is a lot of ammo. To many of us, it is 3 or 4 hours worth of play time. Last Sunday, me and two buddies burned through:
-400 rounds 9mm
-140 rounds .308
-60 rounds '06
-220 rounds 7.62x39
-500 rounds .223
-50 rounds 10mm
-100 rounds .40
-136 rounds 7.62x25
-6 rounds .375 Ultra (always gets a reaction from unfamiliar shooters:evil: )
-36 rounds .44 Mag.

Total 1,648 rounds between 1 and 6 O'clock. We even broke away for awhile so two of the guys could eat $h*t a few times trying to jump a 50cc Honda over a 4' burm.

But yeah, the folk at Wally world do look at you kinda funny when you stack 2 bricks of .22 LR, 8 boxes of 9mm, 5 boxes of .45 and a couple value packs of 12 gauge on the conveyor.

Wal*Mart had a sale a couple years ago and I stocked up on 9mm WWB and 12-ga shotgun shot shells. I had two cases of 12-ga shells and three boxes of 100 9mm. The clerk says the same thing, "Is that all? You fighting a war?"

I responded, "Umm.. You're right. Give me 2 more boxes of 9mm please. And 2 bricks of 550 Golden Bullet .22's"

That shut him right up.
