Can the ammo situation get much worse?

I think there are only a few boxes of a few calibers left. That's all there is. The stores just move the same boxes around from store to store and call it an "ammo shipment". Except for 7.62mm Nagant. Last time I was in Cabala's they had a couple of cases of that.

Y'all didn't learn your lesson in 09&10? Ammo was hard to get back then. Although .22lr wasn't an issue.

Between buying ammo weekly and buying reloading components I'm set for quite awhile.

What if this shortage was food related? Be prepared people. For ammo buy 2 shoot 1.

If those reported Republicans do join Reid and let the UBC bill come forward expect more to get their horde on. In otherwords ots going to get worse come Thursday.
And I guess there will be a run on .17HMR, & .222Rem. rifles, and .45LC and Nagant revolvers so they can shoot the only ammo still on the shelves.

Oh, and shotguns to shoot the birdshot. Biden will be happy-happy.

I've been trying to stock up on some things, 9 mm and 45 acp more so, and it's been like others have described. Be at the right place at the right time and you might get lucky. I've not gone early and waited in any lines though. I have a modest supply of what I use except for 9 mm. Gonna hit the local Walmart and Big R today for a look.

"By the time I got home on Armslist there was and ad for 45acp and 22lr."

I'm pretty disgusted by that....one of the reasons my dealer of choice logs your name and I.D. these times and limits you to a few boxes. They also recognize you and will say something if you show up everyday.

Buying ammo in bulk and leaving nothing for the guy behind you simply to flip it for a profit online is pretty low...

I wonder how they would feel if Wal-Mart instead would charge Arms-List prices? :banghead:

The problem here is that the retailers aren't charging enough. If they would charge something closer-to market price, there wouldn't be enough margin left for people to flip it.

Another problem here is people who buy ammo to keep it for themselves, because they just removed that ammunition from the market. Whether they are stocking it to help buffer them from this kind of market in the future, or shooting it, they are removing it from the market.

People speak of governmental purchases being responsible for shortages , but the government does not buy 22 rimfire, do they?

I was lucky yesterday. I go to Walmart to the sporting goods section. There was no handgun or rifle ammo except for .410 Judge, .243 Winchester and some other odd stuff. We hear from someone else that the trucks just came in, we are waiting and waiting at the counter....

First we were told that they cannot release ammo until the truck has been fully unloaded. It was 5 pm and it would be at least 8 pm. We ask to see the manager, him and another manager stop by and explain their store policy that they cannot release ammo until the truck is fully unloaded. There were two other people ahead of me in line, I just said I need a box or two of 45 acp (I would have bought three boxes if I could). The other two customers needed .40 and 9mm .There is a 3 box limit per customer.

The other customer ahead of me tries talking to one manager, I just said I needed a box of .45 acp, the other customer chimes in and says just give us a number and we'll just shop the store until the numbers are called. Manager says they tried that once and people were bringing in numbers from the other day and it was an abuse of the system.

So I said, I'll pay in advance and just set it aside for me, manager they can't do that. OK, I guess we wait, meantime there was a line forming for the ammo...seems most wanted the 9 mm. The manager said he was going to look at the truck and left, and we are all waiting and talking about the ammo situation.

Some of the customers were relating horror stories of places where they saw common 9 mm ammo sell for $50 online. Another customer gave his theories on why there is ammo shortage, another one was questioning why the govt needed hollow points and other was explaining that he cut back on target shooting until he could buy another box of ammo.

The manager comes back with the flat cart. There were just a few ammo cases on the truck. The guy behind the counter opens up the cases and goes through them. First guy in line buys three boxes of 9mm. The second guy wanted .40 cal but settles for three boxes of 9 mm. Me..third in line was 'lucky' there was ONE 50 round box of .45 acp.

There was no more handgun ammo left, the people behind me were looking for 9mm, .22 cal , and other regular handgun and rifle ammo, there was some rifle ammo but I didn't wait around to see what it was. I paid for the single box of .45 acp considered myself lucky and left. At this point the line was pretty long and I could see people were frustrated and disappointed.

It could possibly get worse and based on what I see (and hear from friends that plan to buy as much as possible when prices drop) I don't see it getting better anytime soon.

Agree with MikeS and have done the same for several years.

Why do we refer to 22 as 22 rimfire; is there such a thing as 22 center fire?
Why do some people call "tuna", "tunafish"? Is there some kind of tuna that is not fish?

But actually, there is (or was) a .22 WCF, as well as .22 -R Lovell, .22 Ack Hornet, .22 BR Rem, .22 CCM, .22 CHeetah MKI, .22 CHeetah MKII, .22 Flea, .22 Harvey Kay-Chuk, .22 Hornet, .22 ICL Gopher, .22 Jet Imp. Ackley, .22 K-Hornet, .22 KSS, .22 Krag Short, .22 Lindahl Chucker, .22 Mashburn Bee, .22 Maximum Lovell, .22 Maynard Extra Long, .22 Newton, .22 Nieder Mag, .22 PPC USA, .22 Picra, .22 Rem. Jet Mag., .22 Savage, .22 Savage Imp. Ackl., .22 Spitfire, .22 Waldog, .22 Wampus Kitty, .22 Wasp (303), .22 Win. Mag. and probably more. ;)

I was just told today that ammo prices for stores is about to go up about 10-15%. That was from a LGS owner but I can't confirm that to be truth. He received that from his distributor.

I heard 2 scheels employees talking to each other one tells the other that a price increase was going into effect and the orders in the pipe line are effected despite the previous price quote.

Gander mountain in Knoxville has plenty shotgun shells and a ten box limit on handgun ammo. $64 for 20 rounds of. 44 magnum, saw most ammo in 20 round boxes for avg of $40. I'd rather throw rocks.

some guys say the govt is not causing the shortage because they do not buy 22 rimfire but when they put in an order millions of tons of lead brass and powder are used for their orders. it is the components also. if the govt along with gun makers and ammo suppliers did not ban norinco because they want a monopoly where they can cause shortages we would have plenty being other Chinese would have started making ammo

Not sure it can get much worse by my standards. Of course that's reminiscing about 1000 round lots of 7.62x39 for $150 shipped. Found a silver lining the other day though when I stumbled across a can of 7N1 over at lucky gunner

I was in one of my LGS today and a guy was shocked at the lack of product on the shelves. He stated he was going to start loading his own ammo and the clerk said "with what??"
Not that he couldn't start piecing stuff together but I'm still shocked at how many fellow shooters are unaware of what is going on.

Why do some people call "tuna", "tunafish"? Is there some kind of tuna that is not fish?

You can tune a guitar but you can't tuna fish.

(Old joke, sorry...)

About 2 weeks ago I was in a Gander Mountain and overheard one side of a cell phone conversation. It went like this:
"No, there isn't any 9 millimeter, but they have a couple boxes of 40 millimeter. Will that work?

Oh, right... Yeah, there isn't any MM on the box. Will it work? No?

There is a box of 44, will that work?

Um, no - there isn't a single box with a 9 on it.

Well, I guess we're not going to the range tomorrow then."

FitGunner:
About one or two years ago in Feb. or March several ammo distributors told gun-owning friends that increases in gasoline prices would force ammo prices about 25% higher by May or June. This concern was expressed on several gun websites. There were no such increases at all, not even close.

Their attempts at inciting a mini panic price spiral was a flop.
Any similar comments now indicate (to me) their realization that the ammo price bubble will deflate. It's just a matter of when and whether it is very gradual-or not.
With so much ammo Trying to be sold on GB etc, imagine the concern of large numbers of unsuccessful sellers when it finally hits. Most people will wait and enjoy the price deflation. Then the spiral will accelerate.

Notice the 47 pages of .22 ammo listed now on GB, with many receiving no actual bids, except from the seller.

Two obvious points:

Save your brass ! Scavenge what you can.
'
Learn to reload ! IOW, "thar's gold underfoot" if you're smart enough to pick it up ! >MW

as one poster said earlier, its hard to come across reloading components as well. i have been buying when i can but thats not too often around here. i am seeing more and more stock come in, but it still does't sit on the shelves. it could always be worse.
