Can the Savage Edge .223 safely fire 5.56?

the answer is a resounding NO! 5.56 is loaded to higher pressures than .223 and the throat a bolt action .223 chamber is cut differently than a AR or mini-14's. So firing a 5.56 in a bolt action would cause an increase in pressure in a case that already has higher pressure and either damage your rifle and possibly your face.

No, you can shoot .223 out of a 5.56 chamber but not the other way around.

Thats why I won't buy a gun chambered in .223, I like not having to care when I buy ammo.
